Stay solo or as a couple using just the master bedroom of the West Wing and enjoy space and privacy in a two-storey Regency home with bedroom washbasin, full 'Victorian' bathroom/WC, living room and additional snug garden door sitting room downstairs, bijou blue downstairs loo, and a kitchen made for convenience and creativity. Off road free car parking, and just a couple of minutes' walk into Kelso town centre with its shops, pubs, restaurants and Scotland's biggest cobbled market square. West Wing has seven rooms including the wee downstairs WC. It's cleanly refurbished makeover of a Regency period listed property so parts are old, but everything is warm and comfortable. The cupboard on the stairs houses the boiler and tank, and may be used for drying coats (avoid the boiler). There's a Kitchen Maid clothes drying rack on the landing too.
The house was exactly what we expected and more. It was cosy and comfortable, peaceful but within a short walking distance from shops and restaurants. Perfect for a relaxing couple of days but would liked to have stayed longer. An added bonus was the small garden, luckily the weather was good enough to sit outside. Looking forward to the next visit.
Extremely comfortable and convenient accomodation for a short or long stay in Kelso. Everything you could possibly need supplied. David my host was really friendly and helpful. Thoroughly recommended.
We booked The West Wing online, 1st time using Airbnb, and from start of booking David was excellent in communicating with me which put me right at ease and i found very reassuring. We absolutely loved our accommodation. It was very spacious, comfortable and we felt very much at home. The accommodation is in a very central location, close to all shops and restaurants and yet situated in a quiet and peaceful location. I would not hesitate to recommend David as a host and The West Wing as a place to stay if visiting Kelso and we look forward to returning. Thank you David and Ailsa for a wonderful stay and to Polly and her friends for the lovely fresh eggs!
My second stay at David's place this Year. Came back as everything was just perfect the first time around. Thoroughly recommended, and look forward to returning on future visits.
Maxwell Lane is a quiet one-way access to a few houses, between Abbotsford Grove and The Knowes, on land once owned by Sir Walter Scott. There are no house numbers, enter TD5 7BB on satnav or use What Three Words: "wanted.oils.whirlwind"
It's very quiet but also very close to a lively town loved by visitors. The Knowes is a free car park, beyond this are the old kirk and kirkyard, the Abbey, and the town square full of fine traditional shops, pubs and restaurants. Towards the river are the Mayfield Garden centre and riverside walk. Shedden Park with cricket and sports, a superb playground, adult exercise and skate/BMX parks faces LIDL which is two minutes' walk away. Past the Abbey, the old bridge leads to the Border Events showground and on to Roxburgh Castle and the Teviot walks - or over Bridgend Park up to Sainsburys. Return on the new bridge or take the foot and cycle paths to explore further. West Wing is at the heart of a thriving town with many events, music, market, Floors Castle and so much more a short drive away.
You can park in the West Wing's own space, and you are welcome to invite friends or family to visit and park here too. The Knowes car park has a fast EV charger 100m away. In the town centre there are bus stances with good services to Berwick, Galashiels via the Tweedbank Waverley Line rail to Edinburgh, and other destinations. On the far side of square past the Town Hall and fishing museum you'll find local taxis. There is fuel at Maxwell Motors and at Sainsburys - follow the signs for Jedburgh to pass these.
All of Kelso town is within walking distance, the main centre only 300m. The Border Events (Union) Showground is a 10-minute level walk, Floors Castle about 30 minutes April-September with its year-round shop, café and gardens best reached by car. There are gentle gradients only near the river and in the centre, which has cobbled streets. There are many pavement ramps and crossing zones and accessibility is generally good.

Hi, I’m David, a semi-retired and widowed photographer, publisher and musician. Born in Cumbria and having grown up and spent much of my younger years in Yorkshire, I moved to Kelso with my late wife and our young children in 1988, and have been here since. I’m a founding member of the Kelso Folk and Live Music Club, well-travelled, and a reader of Sir Walter Scott and James Hogg in whose landscape I live. Since my wife passed in 2019 I’ve travelled less and re-discovered the beauty of the Borders, and would love to share it with you.
