With views of historic districts overlooking the sea, shopping streets and panoramic terraces, including the inimitable bastion of Santa Croce, where to spend romantic evenings after sunset, Cagliari is the main and most populous city of Sardinia.
The Castello district rises on the highest hill, characterized by ancient bastions, now terraces, where nightlife is animated, and by picturesque streets overlooking noble residences: Palazzo Regio and Palazzo di Città, as well as the cathedral of Santa Maria.
Of great charm are the medieval towers of the entrance to the castle, of the Elephant and of San Pancrazio.
Villanova is connected to Castello by the staircase of the bastion of Saint Remy: every year at Easter in the district there is an air of passionate devotion during Holy Week. All year round, however, it welcomes you in its elegant boutiques and among its treasures: the cloister of San Domenico, the church of San Saturnino and the basilica of Nostra Signora di Bonaria, a Christian temple in Sardinia.
At the foot of the Castle you will descend to the Marina, which will be impressed by the splendid buildings and porticoes of Via Roma, including the Palazzo Civico. Created to welcome fishermen and merchants, it is the symbol of a multi-ethnic city.
In the neighbourhood you will find the church of Sant’Eulalia, with precious Roman remains. While the other historic district of Stampace is coloured every first of May for the Feast of Sant’Efisio, an appointment awaited by the whole island.
Among its narrow streets is the Baroque church of St. Anne.
Just a short walk from the historic centre, do not miss the Amphitheatre, one of the most important Roman monuments in Sardinia, and the Botanical Garden, a green oasis in the city centre.
Outside the city centre, you will admire the castle of St. Michael and Tuvixeddu, the largest Phoenician-Punic necropolis in the Mediterranean (6th-3rd century BC).
At the end of the cultural tour, you can immerse yourself in the thousand natural attractions: the lagoon of Cagliari, the Molentargius-Saline Park, to be covered by mountain bike watching the flight of pink flamingos, and the sea. Take a dip at Poetto, a town beach of soft sand eight kilometres long lined with a pedestrian path and a cycle path. Gorgeous even at night, when it reveals its glamorous side.
From Poetto you can start an excursion to Calamosca and the Sella del diavolo. Finally, taste the Sardinian delicacies: spaghetti with bottarga, burrida, made with gattuccio di mare and walnuts and fregula with clams.
Or if you prefer meat specialities don't miss the famous Sardinian porceddu, sausage and pecorino, culurgiones and malloreddus.
