The Lavoir house is in the heart of Espelette. It is close to the church and around the corner from Choko Ona, a Michelin star restaurant. The center of Espelette is a 5 minute walk from the house either around past the church or over the foot bridge behind the house.
It is a pleasure to stroll through the streets of Espelette - appreciating the beautiful Basque houses with drying piment d’Espelette that hang from the facades and balconies before being ground into the spice that’s used widely in Basque recipes.
The village has many gourmet food stores (including a wonderful bakery, a couple of butcher shops selling delicious prepared foods and the best Gateau Basque in the area, a cheese shop, several chocolate shops and many places to purchase the famous piment d’Espelette as well as clothing, shoe and craft boutiques.
Make sure to visit into the Castle of the Barons of Espelette, the 500-year-old town hall that houses a museum and tourist office. Also, don’t miss the Espelette market that is on Wednesday year-round plus on Saturday during the summer
There are a variety of restaurants in the village. Our personal favorite is to stroll around the corner to Choko Ona, the neighborhood Michelin star restaurant for lunch or dinner.
While the town can sometimes get a little crowded, the house is in a calm enclave, minutes away in the old center of Espelette where you can relax in the fresh air by the river and enjoy the views of the mountains and the village.
So many visit because it’s just so charming.

Espelette is a wonderful village to walk around. When the village is crowded during the high season, it is best to walk from the house so there is no worry about parking. In fact, the house is closer to Espelette than some of the village parking areas. The village has some parking in the center of the village if you are visiting in the off season.
