Ozkan's place is the reason our stay in Istanbul was so special. The unique atmosphere, decor and location of the place reflect the fantastic history of the city. The neighborhood is peaceful, safe and private compared to other areas visited by tourists, yet well connected to places you want to see. It makes you feel as a local, immersed in the community. The only thing to know is that Ozkan's house is located on a hill, so it requires a bit of a steep walk-up from the train station on the Bosporus. For us it was well worth it.
Ozkan’s place was great. Well located and walkable distance to public transportation. The home is vintage and charming.
Fall in love with this wonderful corner of Istanbul with its vibrant village feel and eclectic mix of cultures. Wander the cobbled streets through the heart of the city and explore what has become a UNESCO World Heritage Site
Balat and Fener are the most colourful neighbourhood in Turkey and it is among the most colourful neighbourhood in the world. A colourful city is so much more than a few flicks of paint. Often, it`s in these dazzling and most eccentric of spots where you will find the real heart of the city and its place within history.
Balat and Fener as Istanbul`s old Jewish and Greek quarter, Balat is kaleidoscope of colours. Tucked away one the shores of the Golden Horn, the Jews settled here after their expulsion from Spain in the 15th century. Over centuries, the area attracted a wide variety of residents, and is today one of the most atmospheric neighbourhoods.
With a wonderfully rich history comes colours a plenty and in recent years, the century old Ottoman houses of red, blues, and greens have brought back their former shining glory. In the wake of the facelft, Balat has become one of the coolest place for a stroll, place to stay, with several chic cafes, boutiques and art galleries popping up on its winding streets corners.
In Balat you can enter an auction and buy an old object with a story in a beautiful streets.
Balat is a magnet of Turkish hipsters, creating a colourful and fasinating, if sometimes discomforting, mix soulful history and faux nostalgia, posing instagrammers and hard working tradesmen. Look for traces of the area`a once diverse religious heritage glimpses of hidden away church spires, doors crowned by Greek or Hebrew writing amed the third wave coffee shops, vintage clothing stores, street art and design ateliers.
Fener was once the little Greece of Istanbul, is now one of the city`s trendy design districts and regaining the international feel of its past.
We are on the edge of the more busy tourism zone and have easy access by Foot, Bus, Ferry, or Taxi.
Go down the hill and make a right along the water front to the heart of the more touristic areas. It's about a half hour walk to Eminonu where you can catch ferries all over the city and the tramway up into Sultan Ahmet; There you will find Aya Sofia, The Blue Mosque, Topkapi Palace (home of the Sultans) and the Grand Bazaar. Or take the tram in the opposite direction to Taxsim, Beyoglu and Kabatas along the Bosphoros. Kabatas is the place to get ferries to The Princes Islands
