Vacation amongst the wild horses, beautiful beaches, experience a vacation where there are no paved roads, no shopping centers, no convenient stores, just you and the beach. This is an 11 mile stretch of beach form one end to the other. There are full time residents as well vacationers all year around. The only “store” is the fire station and it’s open a couple hours a day selling basically ICE and some souvenirs of Carova. The moment you drive off the pavement and onto the beach starts the 11 mile stretch to the VA line/Wild Refund. There are no vehicles allowed beyond that point but I highly recommend parking and walking through!!! There is shopping, grocery stores, restaurants, activities, etc. in Corolla, about 5 minutes before the paved road ends so not far off the beach. Traffic is slow in the peak season of summer, 15 mph the entire way on the beach so from one end to the other is about 45 minutes, from the road to our place is about 30 minutes give or take. We are located two ramps away from the fire station, roughy 9 miles down. This area is one of the only areas with an expansive beach which is a huge PLUS!!!! Driving down the beach you will see areas of “skinny beach”, not much room between vehicles coming and going during a high tide and the beach goers! There are no “stumps” to watch out for either! You will pass these on your way down as well. We chose this section of beach specifically when we decided to build our beach home.

You must have a four wheel drive vehicle to get here. While it’s not a law and many have tried without it but ultimately almost everyone gets stuck in the sand. 4x4 vehicles with the tires aired down to 20 PSI will have no problem. Airing down your tires to 20 PSI is now mandatory and tickets have been issued for those who choose not to do so. Trust me, it’s much easier to drive on the beach with your tires lowered, I could never understand why some folks just choose NOT to do this. Parking is directly in front front of the house, you can also pull forward and double park so 4 vehicles at least can comfortably fit. You will be given TWO parking passes for parking on the beach. These passes are not replaceable, the county is very strict on the number of passes given out each year. It is imperative you return them prior to leaving as they are the only two we have for the season. I will have a reminder list and make it virtually impossible to forget so don’t worry! You must have parking passes on display to park your vehicle on the beach and you must park in the middle of the beach so that cars can drive by on the dune side and the front of the beach is open for people so parking is in the middle. Watch your surroundings as children tend to pop out behind parked vehicles or a horse may be wandering down the beach. Please please please stay clear of the horses and obviously no feeding them. They are wild horses after all and no one can predict their actions. They are beautiful to watch from a distance but at a distance.
