Galata is a historic district in Beyoglu, Istanbul, located at the north of the Golden Horn, and historic peninsula towards Taksim Square.
It is home to many buildings of historic and architectural importance as well as being a social and cultural hub. From ancient monuments to museums, art galleries, retail stores, restaurants, coffee shops and clubs, Galata has it all.
The focal point of Galata, one of the prominent landmarks of Istanbul, Galata Tower was first built by Byzantine Emperor Justinianos in 507-508 and then the current tower rebuilt in 1348-49 by Genoese, is now an exhibition space and museum. Tower summit offers breathtaking views of the Bosphorus, Golden Horn and Historic Peninsula.
Banks Street, Kart Çınar Street, Serdar-ı Ekrem Street, Buyuk Hendek Street, Galip Dede Street are the streets around Galata Tower where you can find lots of historical places and buildings, stores, coffee shops and restaurants.
Galata Mevlevi Lodge Museum on Galip Dede Street is one of the top things to do in Galata, Whirling Dervishes Show is also performed here on specific days of the week.
The Karaköy-Tünel Funicular (the proper name of it) is just around the corner of this museum and it is the second oldest underground transport after the London underground, built in 1875. It has two stations, connecting Karaköy and Beyoğlu and Istiklal Street starts at the Tünel Square and runs as far as Taksim Square.

If you follow the Buyuk Hendek Street, you will reach Sishane Square. Next to this square is Mesrutiyet Street, where Pera Palace Hotel, Pera Museum, Soho House and Mikla Restaurant (one Michelin star) are located.
This street is parallel to Istiklal Street (Grande Rue de Pera), the busiest and highly populated Street of Istanbul, comparable to Oxford Street in London. or Fifth Avenue in NYC. It is flanked by late Ottoman era buildings in a variety of styles including Neo-Classical, Neo-Gothic, Renaissance Revival, Beaux-Arts and Art Nouveau. Many of these buildings once residential, but mostly now boutiques, music stores, art galleries, cinemas, theatres, libraries, coffee stores, pubs, hotels, historical patisseries, restaurants and international chain stores. A nostalgic tram runs along the street from Tünel to Taksim Square every 15 minutes.
Cihangir, one of the coolest neighborhoods of Istanbul is 15 minutes walk from Galata. Cihangir- Çukurcuma Street is famous for its shops selling antiques. You can find lots of cool coffe shops, restaurants and bars in Cihangir. Nobel Prize winner Orhan Pamuk’s Museum of Innocence is also in Cihangir.
Galataport Istanbul, just steps away from Galata, is regarded as a major destination project globally with a cruise liner port on the 1.2-kilometer coastline of Galata, Karakoy and Tophane. The finest works of modern art in Turkey can be found at the Istanbul Museum of Modern Art and Mimar Sinan University Istanbul Museum of Painting and Sculpture, both of which are located inside its premises. Located in the center of the Clock Tower Square, the Tophane Clock Tower, dating back to 1848, has been restored on-site. Galataport is the new gastronomy neighborhood of the city and features numerous domestic and international brands that offer a wide selection of Turkish and world cuisines.
Galata is the right place to stay for you if this is your first time in Istanbul, you want to see a lot of sights in the shortest time possible, and you want to avoid long travel times. Besides all the cool things to do in Galata, you’re still fairly close to the Historical Peninsula of Istanbul which is a must-see for visitors to the city, hosting most of its famous museums, historical sights and monuments such as Spice Market, Grand Bazaar, Hagia Sophia, and from Kabatas Pier, you can get a ferry to Kadıköy on Asian continent or Princess Islands.
You could also walk across Galata Bridge over Golden Horn to Eminönü, the Bridge's romantic appearance has made it the subject of many paintings and engravings. All along the bridge you’ll find fishermen casting their lines into the Golden Horn.

Galata area is compact enough to explore on foot, as the narrow streets are impractical for public transport.
Sishane subway station, the major subway line, is just 5 minutes walk from Galata and one stop away from Taksim Square.
The Karaköy-Tünel Funicular has two stations, connecting Karaköy and Beyoğlu and Istıklal Street starts at the Tünel Square and runs as far as Taksim Square.
A nostalgic tram runs along Istiklal Street from Tünel to Taksim Square every 15 minutes.
Tram T1 Karakoy Satation is steps away from Galata, by walking 5 minutes or by Karakoy- Tunel Funicular. Tram T1 will be most useful for those who want to visit the Old City of Istanbul. Tram T1, which allows you to reach places such as the Grand Bazaar, Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace and Spice Bazaar, will also enable you to reach the other side of the Golden Horn.
Alternatively, you could also walk across Galata Bridge over Golden Horn to Eminönü and follow the tram line. Sultanahmet Tram Station is the most important stop on Tram T1 as you can walk to iconic structures such as the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia, Basilica Cistern and Topkapi Palace from the Sultanahmet Tram Station.
