This is one of those out-of-the-way gems and it happens to be for a good cause, too. We were looking to climb to the sacred lake Chikabal early in the morning to get the best views and stay cool and so wanted to get closer than Quetzaltenango (It can be a 40-miniute or more drive in depending on traffic). This popped up as a much-closer alternative, and had great reviews on food and location so we grabbed it and were not sorry. As it turned out, it is part of the "Xela AID Complex" which serves the local indigenous community with a number of services. The cool thing about that is that because of that, we got to meet local children, too. They were super-inquisitive about who we were and where we were going to hike. Fun to practice our Spanish with them! This accommodation had excellent food, excellent service, nice people (we met Fernanda, Maria Julia and Alberto). Fernanda ran the restaurant ("El Comal") and got us off bright and early on our climb with sack lunches she prepared for us which was great because we were hungry once we got to the top. It is a several hour climb, great payoutt (worth the 500 or more steps we walked up and down!) Glad we took the time to see this, stayed over two nights in order not to rush. We were surprised to find such a well outfitted place in this rural community and are sending friends there later in the summer who also want to climb to the crater lake and maybe take weaving lessons. There is a great little free-trade cooperative, by the way, if you want to buy weavings from the actual artists. Great place! We loved it!

This kind of luxury was unexpected in the Guatemalan highlands. It out-performed my expectations. The pictures in the listing are great but it was even better in person. The food was healthy and delicious and Chef Fernanda met my needs as a vegetarian/no-gluten at every one of our meals across five days. As an added benefit turns out our payment works as a donation to a non-profit that educates kids and provides health care. Hot shower, hot coffee, wifi was free and worked great. I can't say enough about this super-comfortable place. High recommendation.
