"Vila Mariana (Portuguese pronunciation: [ˈvila maɾiˈɐna]) is a borough of the city of São Paulo, Brazil. Located to the south of Bela Vista and Liberdade, east of Jardim Paulista and west of Ipiranga, it's a dynamic area of the city. Similar to its neighbor district, Moema, it's a wealthy area and it comprises some of the most famous symbols of São Paulo, like the Ibirapuera Park, the Obelisk and Mausoleum of the heroes from the Constitutional Revolution in 1932 and the "Monumento às Bandeiras", and the Fundadores de São Paulo monument.
The district also has in its limits the headquarters of the Federal University of São Paulo and its medicine school.
Vila Mariana panoramic view
Until the early 20th century, it used to be a stop for chariots and horse riders on the way to Jabaquara from the central area of São Paulo. The whole trip would take an entire day, but now it is commutable by car within less than 30 minutes.
Vila Mariana is also the area where Athina Onassis lived, when married to Brazilian horse rider Álvaro Alfonso de Miranda Neto."

"Among the public transport options, the most practical, efficient, fast and comfortable is the subway. Not to mention that the stations are easily identifiable, which makes life much easier for tourists! Just know the name of the destination stop, the Line number and color. A simple map will be able to solve all doubts. The only disadvantage of the subway is the excess of passengers during peak hours (from 7:00 am to 10:00 am and from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm). it is the fastest option, as the traffic during this period is not good.
São Paulo currently has 5 subway lines in operation. They are identified by colors and numbers. The lines that most serve tourists are 1-Azul (north-south route, connecting Tucuruvi to Jabaquara), 2-Verde (connecting Vila Madalena to Vila Prudente, passing by Avenida Paulista) and 4-Amarela (connecting to Estação from Luz to Butantã). Besides them, there is the 3-Red (east-west connection) and 5-Lilás (which goes from Capão Redondo to Adolfo Pinheiro Station). See the complete map of São Paulo's subway and train lines.
The subway is integrated into the CPTM train system. Anyone who sees the transport map may even think that they are all subway lines. But stay tuned! The symbol of the two companies identifies the lines and shows which is a subway and which is a train. Even though the two systems are different, they work the same way. So don't be afraid to take a train. They are especially efficient to circulate around the always bottled Marginal Pinheiros.
Opening hours: The subway operates from 4:40 am, but it has different closing times according to the stations (in general, it closes at midnight). On Saturdays, the closing time is extended until 1:00 am. Check the subway timetable.
Buses
São Paulo's bus system has undergone several transformations and is currently showing itself as a good alternative for visitors, especially when it is necessary to complement a route that the subway does not cover completely. The exclusive corridors facilitated the flow of vehicles, which travel faster than cars. The difficult thing is to identify the necessary line, as well as the stopping point (there are more than 19 thousand in the entire city). So, if you intend to venture on buses, don't give up a travel app. With it it will be very easy to identify the best route.
The main corridors in São Paulo are:
Campo Limpo / Rebouças / Downtown
See José Diniz / Ibirapuera / Santa Cruz
Tiradentes Expressway (Southeast Axis)
Inajar / Rio Branco / Center
Itapecerica / João Dias / Santo Amaro
Jd. Angela / Guarapiranga / Santo Amaro
clay bread
Parelheiros / Rio Bonito / Santo Amaro
Pirituba / Lapa / Center
Santo Amaro / Nove de Julho / Center
See the map of São Paulo corridors and more information about lines and routes in São Paulo.
Taxi
Taxi is a very common means of transportation in São Paulo. The price is cheaper than many cities in the country and for short distances they are a good option, especially at night, when there is no more subway. They can be called directly on the street or by mobile apps. Currently, the city is experiencing a clash between taxi drivers and drivers of the Uber application, who operate in the city of São Paulo and have generated great controversy with competing taxi drivers.
bike
The city of São Paulo has been undergoing constant adaptation works for the implementation of bicycle paths. The system is not yet so efficient to allow locoting throughout the city, it is still worth a walk, especially along the Avenida Paulista bike path. There are two bicycle rental systems: the Ciclo Sampa and the Bike Sampa. To register, you must access the website and enable a credit card for billing. Rent is quite simple and to pick up the bike, just follow the instructions at the stations. In the Ciclo Sampa system, the first half hour of use is free and R$5 is charged for every half hour thereafter. In the Bike Sampa system, the user is entitled to one hour of use free of charge. If you wish to stay longer, you will be charged R$ 5 for each extra hour. See details about Ciclo Sampa and Bike Sampa. "
