Cozy casita in San Sebastián Rio Hondo. This is anything but ordinary! I live on the edge of the village and my front yard is the forest and a few steps away is the main trail to the river and forest. This is an authentic Zapotec village. I have lived her 11 years and will give you a short tour upon arrival. Please see neighborhood description for activities to do in the village. My guests say it is like stepping into a National Geographic special. Very tranquil and peaceful on most days. What was once my rustic kitchen 9 years ago, I have now made into a comfortable cottage with every amenity possible here in this remote region. I offer Starlink internet for the working nomad and we have cellular now!
What a magical little corner of the world!! Janet was a wonderful host, very understanding when we had scheduling difficulties, gave great directions, very communicative throughout. The dogs and cats are adorable. The colorful garden and cozy fireplace, what a dream.
Unfortunately Janet was not there for the stay but her Amigo Herber met us on our arrival and showed us around around the Casa. As with all the reviews the Casa is beautiful, the garden is amazing, Anna the neighbor is excellent and provided us with breakfast both days for a fair price. Herber was absolutely incredible, he was born in the village and provided us contacts and recommendations for all our wants and needs. We can not thank Herber enough.
There are not enough stars to give, or words to share, to adequately describe the beauty of this home, this village, and this wonderful host Janet. The pictures of the casita drew me in, but do not nearly capture the charm of it, where on the first floor you can keep warm by the fire at night and awaken to the sounds of the birds in the morning. Upstairs is a perfect nook to meditate, take a nap, write, draw, or allow any other creative inspirations to flow. The village of San Sebastián is quaint and charming, still authentically Zapotec but now home to a growing community of ex-pats who have been drawn here by the peace and tranquility. In a day, one can eat a delicious meal prepared by Ana next door, do a temezcal, walk in the forest surrounded by butterflies, converse and connect with this wonderful community. Janet is one of the kindest people I have ever met, and has a heart of pure gold. I look forward to staying connected, and to returning here for many years to come 🙏😊❤️
This is a very authentic Zapotec neighborhood. Quiet times start at 8 pm. We are a community that is up with the birds and asleep with them too!
Surrounded by nature and local families, this village is new to tourism. I am located on the edge of the forest with beautiful views. The hiking trails are out my back yard.
To get here: FROM THE COAST BY PUBLIC TRANSPORT: hwy 175 to San Jose del Pacífico. you can get a taxi or moto taxi from there to San Sebastian. Have the taxi take you to Tienda de Mari in El centro. I'm off the road that runs below the store. pass through the second gate on the right and that will lead you to my house.
BY CAR FROM THE COAST: Hwy 175 to La Venta, this is the first village past San Jose del Pacífico. There's a sign that points you up to San Sebastian. After about 20 minutes turn right at the second Arch, not the green one into El centro. turn right at the second street. follow that street a short way to Tienda de Mari. I live below the Tienda. There's a parking across from the Tienda for a fee. Follow the road down from the Tienda, no cars, to the second gate on your right. This will lead you to my house.
FROM THE CITY OF OAXACA BY PUBLIC TRANSPORT: Transport services by Lineus Unidos to Miahuatlán or San Jose del Pacífico. They run every 20 minutes. My neighbor, Ana can cook for you local mountain food in her kitchen. She can provide vegetarian cuisine. Most of her veggies come from her organic ranch close by. There are also 3 local restaurants.
We are home to a few local projects, Khadi Oaxaca, organic cotton apparel and Ananda Learning Center, Montessori School, among others. Tours of these places can be arranged.
The first Sunday of the month we have a Farmers Market.
Above me is a Temazcal (sweat lodge) and vegetarian restaurant. Temazcals can be reserved to do on your own or with a local Curandera (shaman).
I can arrange hiking trips in the forest with a local campesino or an English speaking guide who lives here and knows the forest well. A fun thing to do during the rainy season, June - October, is to take a guide into the forest for mushroom hunting and return to have my neighbor Ana or Margarita cook them up for you!
The guides can also assist you to San Jose del Pacifico or San Mateo Rio Hondo for a day hike and lunch there.
We also have a bilingual herbalist who can provide medicinal herb walks in the forest.
Another activity is to learn weaving on a back-strap loom. I can arrange for this special activity with a local family. This activity would need a time commitment of no less than 3 days (3-4 hours daily) to complete a small project.
Cooking classes with Ana my neighbor are available. She is a fabulous chef using only a wood stove. She grinds her home grown organic corn . Her menu is extensive with all of the famous gastronomy Oaxaca is famous for. My favorite is Pozole with mushrooms!
Soap making is available with a minimum of a 2 day stay. Your co host Heber is our local, Zapotec soap maker. He trained with the best....Me!!!! He offers the cold process method.
For anyone who doesn't speak Spanish, we have a translator available upon request for any needs you may have during activities.
The rainy season is May 15- October 15. Mushroom season!
THIS IS SAN SEBASTIAN RIO HONDO.

Parking is available for a small fee on a neighbor's land.
There is no need for driving as everything is within walking distance.
