This large characterful farmhouse is a lovely country get-away with period and heritage features throughout. This property is surrounded by farmland with stunning views of the countryside, great for families and groups looking for a rural getaway. The Farmhouse lies in a heritage county just outside Whitchurch, a busy village, with a thriving local shop and cafe, an Indian restaurant and several nearby pubs and restaurants. The next nearest town is Monmouth, an historical town just 6 miles from the farmhouse where you will find two golf courses, shops, several churches, an historic independently-owned cinema, an ancient medieval covered bridge and the popular Nelson Museum. There is also a castle, near to the place where Henry V was born. The farm is also set on the edge of the beautiful Wye Valley, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and the Forest of Dean is very close by with walking, cycling, climbing, castle trails and many other activities. The property is set down a private lane and is detached. There are grounds surrounding the property which guests can enjoy as well as an orchard to the front of the property. All the good things written about this house are true - it is a quirky, large comfortable house, ideal for large family gatherings. Comfortable beds, clean bathrooms and large reception areas. However, two things were very off putting- firstly the incessant barking and howling of a dog residing in the barn behind the house. The owner acknowledged that this was a problem and told us not to go near the barn as the dog could be very aggressive (the barn is not on the property so we were not in danger). But it made sleeping very difficult. Secondly, of the three ovens, not one got up to the proper temperature. Of the six burners on the hob, only three worked. For some guests this won’t matter, but as we were planning to cook all our meals from scratch, trying to do so on 3 hobs only for 15 people was difficult. If the dog and the cooker could be sorted this would be a great place.

We did not know what to expect when we booked the house. There was a number of issues we picked up on. Not being allowed in before 5. O’clock meant we arrived in the dark. There was not enough bins for the rubbish we had to leave the rubbish in black bags on leaving. On the positive side the we loved the way the property was set up all old world furniture. The grandchildren loved exploring the rooms. All of the beds were really comfortable. Even though the weather was awful we went exploring the caves, the old cars. We visited Ross on Wye and Monmouth also Goodrich castle enjoyed them all. Very nice weekend thank you.

The cottage is, as many have said, quirky and full of character. It is extremely spacious and has good heating. The log burner and the big dining room table for the family to gather round were much appreciated. But… It is in need of a real deep clean and decorating. Food preparation areas in the kitchen were dirty and would not meet modern food hygiene standards. Several of the bathrooms and toilets were dirty with mould/years of accumulated dirt in corners, on skirting and carpets. We don’t normally give negative reviews but we feel this needs pointing out.
