Our apartment is in Mijas Pueblo, a traditional Andalucian mountain village full of character. Its picturesque white-walled houses along narrow (and often quite steep!) streets and flower-lined stairs, pleasant squares and cosy corners, along with its beautiful botanical garden beg to be explored. Every time you turn a corner you have a new lovely vista.
Be aware that with the steep, narrow and sometimes uneven streets, Mijas may not be the ideal holiday destination for those with mobility problems!
There is a great variety of bars and restaurants, from traditional Spanish to Indian, Italian and Lebanese establishments, including good takeaways.
Mijas also has lots to offer those who enjoy a bit leisurely retail therapy. Apart from a variety of grocery stores and an indoor market for your everyday needs, there are lots of little shops selling everything from traditional Spanish pottery and carpets, clothing, and souvenirs to all manner of art and craft, as Mijas is home to a great number of artists, writers and craftspeople. Some of them display their wares on the craft market on the main plaza every Wednesday, worth checking out.
Of course, there are also fiestas, shows, concerts and exhibitions to enjoy throughout the year in Mijas and along the coast. The locals live and love their traditions, and it feels great to be part of it.
If you'd rather get away from the bustle, just keep heading upwards and in a few minutes you are in the Sierra de Mijas just above the village. There you're more likely to meet the ubiquitous mountain goats rather than people. If you just want a little stroll, you can head up to the old chapel which looks down on the village, where you can sit on a bench and enjoy the views. For the more ambitious, there is a network of marked paths leading all over the Sierra. There is some very nice walking to be had there, among the scent of wild rosemary, thyme and lavender.
Or if you'd rather head down to the coast, the busier coastal resorts of Benalmadena, Los Boliches, Fuengirola and La Cala de Mijas - which have large supermarkets including El Corte Inglés, Carrefour, Mercadona, Lidl and Aldi - are just a short drive away. Or you can hop on the train to take a leisurely trip to Malaga. A regular and cheap bus service from Mijas Pueblo makes Fuengirola and Los Boliches particularly easy to reach. If you’re headed for the beach, we can recommend the beach in La Cala, and there are also some lovely quieter beaches in the direction of Marbella, for example Cabopino.

The apartment comes with private and secure off-street parking, in case you want to hire a car. If you don't, you can take a taxi from/to Malaga Airport (just a 20mins to half-hour drive). A cheaper option is the train from the airport to Fuengirola (40mins). There you can catch the M122 bus to Mijas Pueblo (15min journey), where the bus terminates. We will meet you at the bus stop, which is just a 10 minute walk from the apartment.
If you’re driving, bear in mind that the streets in Mijas Pueblo are narrow and mostly one-way, which means most people get lost the first time. So if you’re coming by car, give us a call and we’ll meet you at the BP station at the start of the village and guide you through.
Hiring a car is a good idea to make the most of the area, but you don’t need one. The apartment is in the village and everything you need is within walking distance. Public transport here is good and reliable. There are regular buses from the Pueblo down to the coast (Fuengirola and Benalmadena) or to Coin, inland. An excellent trainline runs along the coast from Fuengirola to Malaga, including an airport stop. Trains run every 20 mins, they are punctual, clean and air-conditioned. You could even visit destinations further away, for example Granada or Ronda, without the use of a car as coach travel here is cheap, comfortable and reliable.
