Great location to relax and unwind, the walk through the RSPB reserve to the beach was very interesting with the wild life. We found the Cottage very comfortable and the beds and towels where very fresh and clean. Nice modern bathroom and a warming log burner. We enjoyed it so much booked to come back next year.
Fantastic location. Friendly RSPB staff. Lovely cottage which was very clean. Hope to return soon
We were travelling with a 4 year old and a 9 month old baby. The cottage is in a very lovely location. There is a great playground just 5 minutes walk from the cottage. The beach is a bit more of longer walk for the little ones (about 30 mins at their speed) so just did it only once but the circular walk from the cottage to the beach through the woodlands is indeed very nice! When we wanted to go quickly to the beach we went to Rockcliffe which had lots of little interested areas to play in the sand and rocks with. There is also free parking and an ice van. We should've checked the tide times but low tide happened quite often for us during the times when we wanted to be by the beach so be aware of that. Because the water is quite shallow in the beach in the reserve, there was no water at all until the eye could reach. It is a beautiful sight though! Also, we didn't go really at the perfect time of the year for bird watchers. We saw plenty of beautiful garden birds from our window - the host provides a bucket of birdfood. Our peak moment was when we saw a Water Rail in one of their hides. Other than than it was pretty quiet. Next time we will try to go around Winter or Spring time. It is still a very lovely and quiet place to rest. Regarding the cottage, the only the that bothered us was that there was dog hair everywhere in the living room including the sofa and sofa couchins. That wasn't nice for us and especially not for the baby who wanted to crawl round. There was no high chair so I called the manager and she very quickly provided one and also a small blanket for the baby to crawl on - she did wanted to crawl all over though. Other than that the cottage was clean. There was a bit of entertainment like boardgames, a DVD player with DVDs but it was harder to entertain our 4 year old, indoors and outdoors, there wasn't much for him to play with. The garden is at the back of the house which makes it difficult to see where your child is going as the bedrooms look out to the back of the house. For us as a family it wasn't the most convenient setup. We drove a bit more than expected to give our active 4 year old something to do. There is a great Dino park about 45 mins away. Besides Rockcliffe we also went to a really great beach called Mossyard Beach - but that's about 50mins drive. The kitchen is well-equipped and has everything you'd need. I'd say the cottage is really great though for older children and just couples. The RSPB is doing such an amazing job and the whole reserve is such a gem. Thanks for an overall lovely time!
Shelduck is a semi-detached traditional stone farm cottage with off-road parking. A log burner keeps the cottage warm and cosy throughout the winter months. The perfect family destination, RSPB Mersehead has a stunning beach and sand dunes just a short walk (1-mile) from the cottage, perfect for building sandcastles and driftwood lodges. In the large farmhouse garden, there is a playground with swings, slide, mud kitchen and badger tunnels providing hours of fun.
Located on the scenic northern shore of the Solway Estuary, the large skies and seascapes give a feeling of escape. RSPB Mersehead is an extensive wetland nature reserve internationally important for the population of wintering Svalbard Barnacle geese and wildfowl. In the spring, the evening air is alive with sound of displaying Lapwing and the distinctive chorus the UK's rarest amphibian, the Natterjack Toad. Tree sparrow and Yellowhammer come to feed from the cottage bird table. Watch for hunting Peregrines, Merlins, and Hen Harriers overhead.
A haven for wildlife, away from Mersehead there are an additional four RSPB reserves to discover; Ken-Dee Marshes, Wood of Cree, Crook of Baldoon and at Scotland’s most southerly point, the Mull of Galloway. WWT Caerlaverock can be found just the other side of Dumfries and there are a number of Scottish Wildlife Trust and Local Nature Reserves to explore.
There are great rock pooling adventures to be found at nearby Rockcliffe or try crabbing from the quay at Kippford. In addition to the wonders of nature, a vast array of attractions will keep young families entertained for hours such as the Dino Park, Cream O Galloway, Mabie Farm Park and the Chocolate Factory. The Camera Obscura, installed in 1836, is on the top floor of the old windmill tower where you can see a fascinating panoramic view of Dumfries and the surrounding countryside.
Dumfries & Galloway is full of history waiting to be discovered. A wide moat, twin-towered gatehouse and lofty battlements make Caerlaverock Castle a medieval stronghold. Learn all about its turbulent history as a castle caught up in border conflicts. Unravel the tale of devotion behind Sweetheart Abbey’s evocative name. Follow in the footsteps of Robbie Burns as you trace the banks of the River Nith from the heart of Dumfries and don’t forget to visit Moat Brae where Peter Pan began. On a wet day, there is plenty of opportunity to explore indoors. Discover the remarkable story of HM Factory Gretna and the Solway Military Coast at The Devil’s Porridge Museum. Visit the home of runaway weddings at Gretna Green, now a 5-star visitor destination or explore the Aviation Museum.
For those looking for a fast-paced action holiday, RSPB Mersehead is located just a short drive from two Forestry Commission 7-stanes mountain bike trails at Mabie Forest and Dalbeattie Forest. A little further afield are the trails in the Galloway Forest Park and the Ae Forest. The Galloway Activity Centre is situated on the banks of the stunning Loch Ken. A challenging links course, Southerness Golf Course is a Scottish Golf Championship Venue whilst Colvend Golf Course offers a parkland experience with panoramic views from the high cliffs.
