I am an retired educator that loves country life. I run my own farm that has been in the family since 1902. Love simple life, country roads and the beauty of nature. The Irvin McCall family moved to Appling County after the Civil War. Irvin McCall found his true love, Mississippi Waters from Tattnall County, Georgia and after living there moved to Appling County. He and Mississippi had eight children and the family are known to love to eat, will talk sometimes until dawn and love singing gospel music. One of his sons, William Shelton McCall purchased the McCall Homestead in 1902. They raised three sons on the farm, oldest son Lorace became a school teacher and Superintendent of Appling County School System. The middle son Henry loved to farm and added land to the estate with his wife Carolyn, who was a school teacher and Sunday School teacher for Mt. Vernon Baptist Church serving for seventy one years. He continued until his death to farm the rich soil of this area and then my mother took on the task. Their youngest son, Clyde became a mechanic and a farmer. I am Henry and Carolyn McCall’s only child. We have grown tobacco, corn, cotton, peanuts, soy beans, and of course our bountiful vegetable garden on this homestead. Deer are plentiful, turkeys roam the fields and farm, and you may see raccoons or opossums if you are out at the right time of night.
