Tartaruga Island is a one acre islet situated in the dammed Chança River that forms in Southern Alentejo the border to Spain. The landscape is dominated by evergreen oak trees. Cistus and lavender covering the hills. Astonishing in spring with abundant blossoms, the rest of the year with the enchanting scent of their aromatic oils. On the island itself organically cultivated gardens offer a rich supply of fruit and vegetables, please with their flowers, invite to sit in the shade and watch the frogs sitting on the lotus leaves... Huts and caravans embellished with lots of love and wood. Surrounded by a veritable jungle of flowering climbers, in summer the place feels like an oasis. All around a huge bathroom in which angling is permitted :) To make a stay in winter more pleasurable several stoves provide hot water and warmth. In summer it's the task of the hammocks to offer a taste of Tartarugan lifestyle and luxury.

I stayed 6 nights at their place in a camper for one person. A mosquito net is inside directly in front of the bed, so I was able to have fresh air inside at night without mosquito bites. (But there not many mosquitos anyway) The meals were delicious and for me as a vegan perfectly balanced. One of the highlights for me was to walk over the island and eat the ripe fruits. And there are a lot of them :) Tânia & Theo really created their own little paradise on this island. And you can see all the passion and love with much details all over the place (watch out for the awareness turtles ;) For me the most intense thing was, to get a little inside how life is also possible beside the "normal" european lifestyle. I missed that already after arriving in Lisbon the day after. At night you have a beautiful dark sky where you can see the milky way, a lot of stars and shooting stars. At day I enjoyed the weather, the lake and of course the green and beautiful garden. Tânia and Theo are very friendly, warm and open people. They care about their guests. We had very interesting talks about all kinds of topics. Additionally I booked a message and the herb tour over the whole island. The message is done by Tânia, very passionate and worth every penny. You can feel that she really cares about you. Theo made the herb tour, with a lot of Information for use cases and conditions. In general, Theo knows a lot. He is a walking lexicon. That all being said, I really recommend their paradise to everybody who want a special experience. I hope I will be able to come back again one day.
É uma experiência que toda a gente deve ter uma vez na vida :) a falta de wc como o conhecemos só se estranha a primeira noite... Os dias são passados em idílica paz junto à barragem de águas cristalinas. A comida vegetariana é espetacular e o ritmo de vida slow motion faz-nos esquecer as horas... Andar na prancha de paddle dá para descobrir recantos privados e as caravanas-quarto são um mimo! Há detalhes lindíssimos no jardim e amena cavaqueira à mesa das refeições :) fica-se perto de algumas terriolas com bons restaurantes. Nesta altura do ano muito calor e poucas sombras durante a tarde!!

Three kilometers east of here an Andalusian eagle cares for its offspring, to the west you'll find a village, nicely whitewashed like all of them around, with the most original café and in Santana de Cambas (half an hour walk northwards) you can experience everything an Alentejan metropolis (167 inhabitants) has to offer :)
Santana de Cambas can be reached by bus from Mértola, that is located 17 km to the west.
From there you've got bus connections to Faro and Lisbon. Check (URL HIDDEN) and (URL HIDDEN)
Should you have not that much time, but still want to get an impression of the surroundings it's advisable (in case you come by plane) to rent a car at the airport. Up here it'll be hard to find something.

Depending on the water level Tartaruga is an island or a peninsula.
In the first case the shore is in a distance from about a kilometer.
"Ferry service" and boat rentals needs to be talked about.
In the second case Tartaruga can be reached by foot.
Usually I can more or less guess at what time of the year the one or the other state is more likely.
