Balat and Fener are the most colourful neighbourhood in Turkey and it is among the most colourful neighbourhood in the world. A colourful city is so much more than a few flicks of paint. Often, it`s in these dazzling and most eccentric of spots where you will find the real heart of the city and its place within history.
Perhaps the most iconic part of Balat is the district’s colorful houses along sloping cobbled streets. These homes are mostly up to 200-years-old. These historic homes are amongst the most photographed buildings in the city, and given its popularity many of these streets now feature cafés and restaurants for you to stop off at and admire the setting.
The neighborhood itself is incredible welcoming, with many family having lived here for generations. You’ll meet locals who are very happy to talk to you if you like to.
Balat and Fener as Istanbul`s old Jewish and Greek quarter, Balat is kaleidoscope of colours. Tucked away one the shores of the Golden Horn, the Jews settled here after their expulsion from Spain in the 15th century. Over centuries, the area attracted a wide variety of residents, and is today one of the most atmospheric neighbourhoods.
With a wonderfully rich history comes colours a plenty and in recent years, the century old Ottoman houses of red, blues, and greens have brought back their former shining glory. In the wake of the facelift, Balat has become one of the coolest place for a stroll, place to stay, with several chic cafes, boutiques and art galleries popping up on its winding streets corners.
In Balat you can enter an auction and buy an old object with a story in a beautiful streets.
Balat is a magnet of Turkish hipsters, creating a colourful and fasinating, if sometimes discomforting, mix soulful history and faux nostalgia, posing instagrammers and hard working tradesmen. Look for traces of the area once diverse religious heritage glimpses of hidden away church spires, doors crowned by Greek or Hebrew writing amed the third wave coffee shops, vintage clothing stores, street art and design ateliers.
Fener was once the little Greece of Istanbul, is now one of the city`s trendy design districts and regaining the international feel of its past.
The district set the past shores of Eminönü along the Golden Horn. It’s 3 min walk to the Tramway stop along the Golden Horn (called Haliç in Turkish) The coastal road all along the Golden Horn is extremely pleasant, with massive parks all along and families walking along the promenade all the way up to Pierre Loti at the end of the Golden Horn
Only 10 minutes away to more busy historical sights. You will be close enough to see all the sights yet will be away from the hustle and bustle of busy tourist crowds.Easy to travel by Fener ferry station, tramway, bus and taxis.
