We are right in the middle of some of the best tourist attractions that France has to offer and we highly recommend the following:
ANGLES SUR L'ANGLIN
Just a 25 minutes drive from Le Bouchet following a really scenic drive along the river Gartempe brings you to Angles-sur-l'Anglin. It derives its name from the Angles, the Saxon tribe that invaded England in the fifth century. Angles-sur-l'Anglin is listed as one of "Les Plus Beaux Villages de France" and it is easy to see why. It is extremely pretty, situated on the river Anglin which divides the village in two. There is the upper part of the village with the remnants of the old fortifications and the lower part of the village with one of the prettiest views of a water mill you are ever likely to see. Take your camera!
BEAUVAL ZOO
Classed as the No. 1 zoo in France and as one of the most beautiful zoological parks in the world, ZooParc de Beauval is home to the largest diversity of animals in France with nearly 6,000 animals including two giant pandas, found nowhere else in France!
BRENNE NATIONAL PARK
With over a thousand lakes, the Brenne is one of the most important fish farming regions of France. The Park itself was created in 1989 to preserve this exceptional "natural" heritage, however it is actually man-made, the first lakes being created by monks in the middle ages! A terrific area for viewing birdlife, the Brenne is also home to a rich range of flora, numerous species of insects and stunning dragonflies and France's most important population of European Pond Tortoises. There are over 100 marked walks ranging from 6 to 32km that can be followed from the maps available from local Tourist offices and there are hides open to the public and guided walks and tours including some with English speaking guides. There are eleven marked circuits for cycle rides which can be a great way of seeing the Brenne with flat roads and very little traffic. Horse riding and canoeing are also available.
CHAUVIGNY
Overlooking the newer lower village, the old walled city of Chauvigny actually has five ruined castles sitting on top of the monumental rock outcrop that is now home to the Geants du Ciel (Giants of the Sky) one of the best bird shows you are ever likely to come across.
DESCARTES
As well as having several supermarkets, cafés and restaurants, Descartes also has a large Sunday morning market. The market is an eclectic collection of allsorts from seafood stalls to sewing machine repairs! Located on the river Creuse, Descartes has a large leisure park offering Kayaking, mini golf, tennis, childrens play area and a large heated swimming pool complex with slides and a jacuzzi all located in beautiful gardens that were the former enclosure of the original fortified chateau.
FUTUROSCOPE
Quite simply, Futuroscope is fantastic and is great fun for all the family no matter what age and whatever your ideas about a theme park may be. Primarily based around the theme of the moving image, the park has more than twenty five attractions and shows that take visitors on an incredible journey through new worlds, 3D experiences and interactive adventures. In the evening and late into the night the park comes alive with the sights and sounds of state of the art light shows. It's a great day out and as it's only 30 minutes away from our gite.
HAUTE TOUCHE
Haute Touche was originally the farm and park of the chateau at Azay-le-Ferron and is now a wildlife park like no other. You arrive at the entrance and take a slow safari style drive around the park getting to view some of the animals on the way with plenty of photo opportunities.Finally arriving at the centre of the Parc you can then either picnic or eat at the restaurant before exploring the parc on foot or on bike getting up close and very personal with the wildlife.Part of a vast forest of 500 hectares in the Brenne, Haute Touche features animals from five continents. We really recommend a visit.
LOCHES
The medieval town of Loches sits atop of the hill overlooking the new Loches and the River Indre. The Chateau known as The Royal Apartments is just one of three magnificent old buildings which includes the Collegiate Church and Europe's best preserved Dungeon which is not, as you would expect underground but is in fact an imposing thirty six metres high! Loches is a lovely place to walk around and browse in the small shops and visit the market on Wednesday and Saturday mornings before settling down in the town square with a coffee and watching the world go by.
LOIRE CHATEAUX
There are more than sixty chateaux spread right across the Loire valley in the three ancient regions of Touraine, Anjou and Orléanais and the Touraine region is home to some of the grandest and most well known including Chenonceau, Villandry and Ussé, the inspiration for the original castle in the fairytale of Sleeping Beauty. But with over sixty Loire Chateaux to choose from which do you decide to visit? The chateaux in Touraine are all easily reached within an hours drive from Le Bouchet. There are the jewels - those chateaux that offer more than just history - perhaps gardens to stroll around, a pretty village for coffee and watch the world pass by or shops and markets to browse. Our favourites are Loches with its dungeon and chateau set in a medieval town with shops and restaurants; Villandry with exceptional gardens; Azay-le-Rideau which is absolutely picture perfect and Clos Lucé the home of Leonardo da Vinci. Of course there are many other chateaux, many within easy reach, and not just in the Loire Valley.
RESTAURANTS
There are many, many restaurants ranging in style and price to choose from, from the Michelin starred "La Promenade" restaurant at Petit Pressigny right to the small but very pleasant restaurant, Assiette Creuse, in Descartes and every other type in between - around Le Bouchet you will find something for everyone.
Further afield there is a fantastic seafood restaurant in the village of Pouzay, Le Gardon Frit. Our gite has a list of local restaurants with indications of pricing and of course we are always happy to book a table for you.
ST CYR LAKE
Only thirty minutes away from our gite at Le Bouchet is the really wonderful lake at St Cyr. With its sandy beach and lovely clean water it makes an ideal location to spend the day just lounging around and relaxing or playing with the kids on the beach. If you want to be a bit more active you can hire one of the pedallos or kayaks. The park also has canoes, windsurfing, sailing, fishing (no license required), golf and pitch and putt. There's also a snack bar on the lakeside for drinks; ice cream and food.
TOURS
An interesting, bustling city known as the second capital of France (in fact at one stage it actually was) combining hundreds of years of history, with gallo roman remains to well preserved medieval buildings alongside newer modern architecture. Take the tourist train to see the many parts of Tours including the old quarter Plumereau and the magnificent Saint Gatien's Cathedral. There's also the opportunity to take a boat trip along the River Loire and see the Loire Chateaux from the riverside.
WINE
Wine of course features highly in the Touraine, with soft reds and crisp white wines and some rather delicious sparkling Vouvray wines! With the Tufa caves along the Loire ideal for storing wine there are many different wine tours (many in English) that are arranged providing the opportunity to sample a glass or two.
