Welcome to Hunt Hill Audubon Sanctuary! We are a public, non-profit learning center and nature sanctuary. Our historic Log Cabin is nearly a century old and offers a peaceful retreat in the woods. All the furniture was updated in 2018. The Log Cabin is located just outside of the main camp, settled on top of a hill overlooking pristine forest habitat. Nearby towns offer additional entertainment or relax in our quiet setting while reading a good book in front of the stone fireplace. This cabin is perfect for those looking for a cozy, no frills, rustic cabin-camping experience in the woods of northern Wisconsin. The historic Log Cabin sits on top of a small hill, accessible by steps, and was built in the 1930s. It features handmade log construction, hardwood floor, a stone fireplace, handmade windows and doors, forged hinges and latches, and square nails. The cabin has a tiny bathroom, quaint kitchen, one master bedroom with a queen size bed, a living room with room for an air bed (provided), and a tiny loft with a twin-size mattress. It also has an unheated porch overlooking the forests of the nature sanctuary. When indoor plumbing was added to the cabin, there was limited space for the bathroom. Because of this, there is no formal bathroom in this cabin. Located near the front door, there is a water closet that has the toilet, and next to it is the stand up shower, which is not in a private room (see the photos). The kitchen includes a sink, small oven/stove with four burners, fridge, microwave, toaster, and coffee maker. It has some dishes, pots, pans, eating and cooking utensils. Dish soap and dishtowels are provided, but dishes must be handwashed by our guests. The bedroom is simple, but spacious and features a queen bed with night stands, lamp and dresser. The living room has a dining table with 2 chairs and a large stone fireplace. The fireplace offers ambiance to the space, but is inefficient in heating the cabin. Wood for the fireplace is located in the wood box on the front porch. A controllable thermostat allows guests to set the temperature of the cabin to their preference (there is no a/c, however the shady location keeps the cabin cool in summer). The living room has a love seat, room to set up the provided air mattress and soft chairs. There is also a tiny loft in the living room that is accessible by a log ladder and has a twin mattress on it. There is no television or internet service at the cabin. We do our best to keep the nearly century-old cabin pest free, but it is not sealed tight. So, guests should be aware that on occasion, there may be mice present - especially in the fall as they make their way towards warmer locations in preparation of winter. We recommend keeping food items in the provided bins, make sure garbage is properly stored and dirty dishes are cleaned up often. Also, the log cabin is located in the beautiful woods of northern Wisconsin. Because of this, guests will experience bugs such as mosquitoes and sometimes deer flies. If you are hiking during the summer, you may also find ticks. It is recommended to wear long sleeves and pants while hiking and to bring bug spray if you will spend time outdoors.
