Casablanca’s Centre-Ville is a designated historic architectural neighborhood which is rich in history and French colonial charm.
It is a primarily older, middle-class neighborhood that is transitioning to a younger, working-class, family neighborhood. The neighbors, muslim people from all walks of life, are friendly but cold. A few of my neighbors are African, French or Middle-Eastern. Some are from working-class families who have lived in the neighborhood for years. A few of my neighbors are older retirees who never want to move. Some of my neighbors have a bit of wealth and others are economically challenged. We have many couples, some with children, some without children, some older empty-nesters. There are renters and owners mixed in together. It's diverse!
I live in the French period Ville Nouvelle (Centre-Ville) of Casablanca - the Mekka for every architect - which was designed by the French architect Henri Prost, a combination of Hispano-Moorish and Art Deco. It was a model of a new town at that time, giving later inspiration to the Bauhaus school and Le Corbusier. Tel Aviv's White City was mostly influenced by Casablanca’s architectural style.
The main streets radiate south and east from Place des Nations Unies. Former administrative buildings and modern hotels populate the area.
Some properties are renovated to look ‘snow-white’ like it was 100 years ago and some still forgotten by authorities and look like Dracula’s houses.
The original name of Casablanca was Anfa, by at least the seventh century BC. After the Portuguese took control of the city in the 15th century AD, they rebuilt it, changing the name to Casa Branca. It derives from the Portuguese word combination meaning "White House" (branca"white", casa "house"). The present name, which is the Spanish version, came when the Portuguese kingdom was integrated in personal union to the Spanish kingdom. During the French protectorate in Morocco, the name remained Casablanca. The city is nicknamed Casa by many locals and outsiders to the city.
Some interesting facts:
** Casablanca is the setting of the 1942 film of the same name starring Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman. The film has achieved worldwide popularity since then. Nominated for eight Academy Awards, it won three, including Best Picture. You can visit the famous Rick’s Cafe from the movie in a walking distance from my home.
** The city is featured in The Mysterious Caravan (1975), volume 54 in the original Hardy Boys series.
** Casablanca is the setting for several chapters in Doubleshot, a 2000 James Bond novel by Raymond Benson.
** Casablanca is one of the key locations in the 2006 video game Dreamfall. Although the city is imagined in the year 2219, much of the present-day architecture is used for inspiration.
** Casablanca is the setting for the first act of the 2016 World War II romantic thriller film “Allied” starring Brad Pitt and Marion Cotillard.
Please see the "Getting Around" section and review the map on this listing page to get a sense of where i am in relation to the closest landmarks.
I love it here and I hope you will too!
You can walk to just about everything from here.
** Less than 50m (160ft):
- Tramway stop;
- CTM bus station (National Bus Network to go to any city in Morocco, a great & comfortable alternative to the trains which are often late). Use the CTM dot MA site (it’s in English and French) to plan your trip around Morocco.
** Less than 300m (980ft): Casa Port railway station (5 min by foot).** Less than 2.5km (1,5 mile): Casa Voyageurs railway station (8 min by taxi). Taxis are easy to get downstairs on the street.
** From 50 to 400m (1/4 mile): you chosen the right neighborhood! many amazing local restaurants, sea food and fresh fish dishes served in the Marché Central, French-style cafés, kebab stalls, street shawarma and pizzerias, barbecue shops, Moroccan pubs and old-school French bars than you could possibly try.
** It's up to you if walking over a mile is too far but just over a mile you will find the Hassan II Mosque, La Cathédrale Sacré-Coeur, La Place Mohamed V or Le Parc de la League Arabe. I’ve walked to all of these places from my home when the weather is nice, which is most of the time in Casablanca.
** I encourage you to use any Internet Map to help navigate and determine if walking is for you. I’ve given you my best info here - but only you know your limitations.
** There are lots of transportation options to get you around the city. Use the CASATRAMWAY dot MA site (it’s in French and Arabic only) to plan your trip on the city tram system. The tram stop is only 50m (160 feet) away. There are friendly, but not so prompt Uber and Careem drivers and most rides cost about $2-$5 in town. If you are on a budget, there are plenty of local “red” cab options - $1 or less. Unfortunately, you cannot rent a bike or a scooter in Casablanca; and the town is not really bikeable.
** Ain Diab and La Corniche beaches are both easily accessible by taxi - about 10 minutes away depending on which part of the city; and by tramway - $0,8.
** If you bring a car or rent one, abundant, safe parking is available for about $1 for 12 hours at night on the street (kept by a night local watchman) or else, you can park your car on an official closed parking of the CTM Bus for $2 per night.
