Beautiful place near Champaign beach - borrow kayaks and go there, you can see turtles in the water! Stuff was really friendly and we had a great time here.

Hello budget travelers. This seemed to be the only cheap camping place in Santo, though we used our own tent. We were there in December and here's an account of facility and extra travel info. Pros: The location is right next to the beach and the immaculate toilet and shower facilities are close, as is the restaurant and kitchen. WiFi is turned on in the restaurant and works if you're in close proximity, solar charged batteries are on in the daytime, and you can charge your phone free at the restaurant office. If weather is clear, you have warm blue clear water, mostly sandy bottom to walk on and a stretch of soft white beach. The owners live onsite (not who you correspond with on AirBnB) and are very kind as is most of the staff. The kitchen is the cleanest one I've used during my month traveling in Vanuatu. Cons: IF it rains (which it did 5 out of our 7 days- and I mean absolutely poured), you will have murky water, nearby elephant island disappears and mosquitoes come out in groves. To stay dry, you are limited to the cover of the tin roof of restaurant. The location says Hog Harbor, that is inaccurate, it is actually at Lonnoc Beach and is part of Lonnoc Bungalows (please note that even though it is one stretch of beach, there are 3 different lodge/bungalow operations which most tourists are unaware of.) The camping price does NOT include breakfast, and there is a daily kitchen fee of 500 vatu. It is a racket what most vans want to charge for the 45 min drive from Luganville (8,000 vatu each way.) Insider info/logistics: Buy your fresh food and staples before you leave Luganville, you can keep them in the kitchen. There is a "bakery" - no sign- driveway is across from Lonnoc Bungalows entrance- walk past all the houses on your right, go all the way to the house the road literally ends at. There is daily fresh bread ( ready around 4:30) cooked in outdoor oven and gato everyday, except Saturday, for 100 vatu per loaf. You can walk about 25 min to Hog Harbor on backroads, there are small "shops" where you stand outside and look in, that have varying degrees of staples and a co op with limited goods. Economically getting there: From Luganville go to Pacific Petrol station. As you're facing the station, on the right, you'll see a slew of local buses and trucks that leave usually after 2:30 and cost 500 vatu. Get off the bus on main road where the sign for Champagne beach is and walk down dirt road until you see sign for Lonnoc Bungalows. Otherwise local drivers want to charge 8000 vatu each way. The restaurant's main chef is owner Louisa, who makes beautiful dishes, but meals average 1500 vatu and up. You can drink the rainwater collected in a holding tank for free. White sand beaches are limited in Vanuatu so I feel this location is hyped, really hyped. No one mentioned the coral is dying. The location of the campsite also tends to be a "car park" area for daily visitors, so there is lots of coming and going- though I never felt our stuff was unsafe. Also the pathway from restaurant to Bungalows is right next to tent area, though all activities shut down around 9pm. Nighttime noise wise, the waves seem very loud. Dogs were only loud when cows came ambling through. Not too many roosters.

We loved our two weeks at Lonnoc Beach bungalows with Kalmer and his family. We had a spot right on the beach front to camp. There is wifi included in the price and use of kayaks for free :) we had clean showers and a toilet and the restaurant was available if we needed it. If you fly into Santo get to Luganville town and jump in a public minibus, they usually leave after 2.30pm and will cost you only 500vt each. Then during your stay you can hitch hike to and from town or along the east coast for 500 per person. The luganville market have great fruit and veg for cheap too - mango’s and pomello’s for 15p!! During our stay we felt part of the community, making friends with Kalmers big family, going to church, eating with them and sharing stories. We definitely recommend camping here (if you have your own tent) and you’re on a budget but want to travel to Vanuatu.
