Mike's Place is wonderful. Very private. The house is a short walk from the cave, so when there were other people at the cave we didn't really notice. Got to see and hear the monkeys. A very unique and eerie experience late at night (in a good way). Lots of birds, Toucans, parrots, hummingbirds (a hummingbird nest right under the eaves on the deck), butterflies, flowers. Very scenic. The road is bumpy going in and out but that's part of the experience. The food at the restaurant is very delicious. Alex our tour guide did a great job taking us in and out of the cave. Unfortunately Mike was laid up while we were there so we never got to meet him. But he was very quick to respond to emails and also Tony or Alex was there when we needed. I wouldn't hesitate for a second to go back. Loved it there.
The house is beautiful and is in a truly amazing location. Their cook makes great food. The house was clean when we got there and the directions were perfect. That said, the house felt like it was about 100°F when we arrived. We specifically asked for AC and weren't warned that the main AC unit is only for the upstairs unit and is broken. There is a small window unit in the upstairs bedroom that didn't help much and we were asked to turn it off at midnight. There was a screen missing out of a window, so a fair amount of bugs got in after dark. We also weren't warned about the smoke in the area. Bed sheets on bunk beds had some stains. I would not recommend this for anyone who is medically frail or disabled (like a couple in our party). I wish we could have stayed, had to leave after first night because of smoke, bugs, & no AC. Just a note: I put in "whole house" which led to me accidently booking both the upstairs and downstairs units for just 3 people - upstairs would worked
Fun location. If you rent the villa, and have more than 4 people, you get the downstairs, and upstairs but just know that there is no interior stairwell , and only beds for 4-5 upstairs, so our kids didn’t want to stay by themselves downstairs, which felt like a separate apartment. The kitchen is a bit lacking, was disappointed. there wasn’t a way to make coffee. The main A/C wasn’t working, and it was a bit of a heatwave, so that was a struggle. Appreciated that Mike didn’t charge for a/c of the window unit, since the main didn’t work, and got us an extra fan, since one of the ceiling fans wasn’t working. We really enjoyed the cave, and the kids really enjoyed swimming in the water and staying cool near the cave. It was an adventure.
Mike place was clean and tidy, basic and rough and ready. The kitchen, crockery and utensils are minimal. The location was great and the site staff were friendly and helpful. The available onsite food is minimal and shopping for provisions should be done before arriving. Well worth a short visit to get away from it all. Access to the location is adventurous along dirt roads with two river crossings. The cave tour is magic and well worth doing.
