We spent 4 nights here and I wish it was more. The place is big, pretty and quiet, the beds were hot and comfortable. We got lucky with weather (17°c in february) and were able to do a different hike everyday, it's about 1h30 to reach either tops (one south and one north of the island) walking in the forest and with a nice view when you're there. Easy access without a car, there are 2 different ferries from Saiki and one of them drops/takes you 2 minutes away from the house, they cost 150 and 200 yen. Host is really friendly, helpful, knows well Kyushu (and the rest of Japan) and his kids are sweet and well educated.
We spent four nights recently at Okuma's place on Onyujima Island, just off Saiki. The first night we slept inside the house (ryokan) on traditional floor mattresses and the other nights we slept onboard Okuma's boat moored nearby. The boat was okay, like a caravan with narrow bunks and sleeping bags. As it is in a harbour, the sea is mostly calm but the boat possibly wouldn't suit you if you're prone to motion-sickness. Onyujima Island is a beautiful, peaceful setting with a well-known 17 kilometre, level, walking track that goes around the island. Now mostly national park with a small population of mainly older people and holiday houses, the island was an important base for the Japanese navy during WW11. There are no shops or cafes there so you will either have to take your own food there or enjoy the enormous, delicious Japanese meals featuring locally caught fish that Okuma and his family can provide, at a very reasonable extra cost. A marine bus goes between the island and Saiki frequently during the day, costs 200 yen per person and takes only a very short time, but the bus stops at about 18:00 and then the only option is a marine taxi. However a group of us arrived back at Saiki late one night after attending a rugby match in Oita and experienced difficulty contacting the marine taxi. Eventually all got sorted out but it's probably better not to assume you can get back over to the island late at night. As there were nine guests using one bathroom, there was a well-organised roster for showers. Okuma and his delightful family are hard-working people who will do all they can to make your stay a success. We would definitely stay there again but would aim to spend our time enjoying the natural environment on the island rather than going back and forth to the mainland.
Travel back in time to ancient Japan, experience life in a setting close to nature (ocean and forest), enjoy Japanese cuisine and discover amazing historical and religious sites (Shinto shrines). Mr. Okuma and his family were very welcoming and provided additional history, information about surrounding attractions, helped with the ferry connections . We would like to visit again.

自我介绍
Hi, my name is OKuma. I have a Japanese Inn in Saiki, Oita. If you want to experience Japan with abundant nature and Japanese island life, you are welcome to stay with us. Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions. Looking forward to meeting you! ===================================================== Guest house: Hanamizuki Auspicious island facing to Bungo strait, located 500 meters offshore of Saiki, town of delicious cuisine. In ancient times, Emperor Jimmu landed on this island and we still preserve the lights lit used when sending him off as Donto Fire Festival. At WWⅡ the aircraft carriers left from Saiki Bay in front of our Ohnyu Island for the sudden attack on Pearl Harbor. But after many years this island is at present called as the nearest remote island in Japan, and is now a community where local people are leading a serene life surrounded by the ocean. The island stay allows you a single person or a group of people exclusively to stay with us in a single lodge. Even though our facilities are not so gorgeous as ordinary Japanese-style hotels, our guests can enjoy a true sense of local life which can not be found in tourists spots. In a simple way once you come to visit this island, you feel like you have time-warped to a good and old Japanese period. You’ll have fun in inconvenience and hand-making. You can just glimpse how the people lead their everyday live through You-tube. Hanamizuki assists you in your stay on the island. The island where you may forget passing time・・・ The life from the early Showa period (Japanese life of 80 years ago) still remains. You are not chased by mobile phones and SNS, not buried in IT information, and time passes slowly. The life on the island is peaceful and we live a self-sufficient life. This island is a historical place where once Emperor Jimmu and Emperor Taishou stepped their feet on it and is written in Nihon Shoki, the Chronicles of Japan.
