My name is Ben, the first grandson to Bernard Gichuki Murage. My grandfather built a life as a station master for the Kenya Railway Company having worked there for a time spanning over 3 decades! He was posted to stations all over the country but he fell in love with Uplands when he was posted here in 1984, the year of my birth! In the 80's Uplands was just coming up economically. With the presence of Uplands Bacon Factory, a thriving facility which rears pigs and produces such succulent products such as the Farmers Choice sausages et al., a dedicated Police Station and the railway station, it was the ideal place to build a family home. More than this, Uplands' appeal to my Grandpa was further magnified by its proximity to Nairobi (about 45 Min drive), its beautiful landscape and lash vegetation spread (Uplands boarders the famous/infamous* Lari Forest) and the cosmopolitan nature. Over the years, we have been blessed to have roads built, provisional administration set up in our back yard and almost all other social amenities. Uplands has the feel of the country side with a thirst for the modern! Having grown up and went away for school and later on for work, my return to this beauty that is Uplands happened under sad circumstances. Both my grandparents passed on and the honors fell on me to take over the responsibility of maintaining the family home. I do this with great pride! The larger Gichuki Family visit often and we sit in the compound surrounding a bonfire and reminisce over the good old days. I live at home with my sister Sharon who is a Fashion Blogger cum event organizer (she works in Nairobi and commutes to work every morning and back in the evening) My Uncle Tony is a very interesting character! A retired Officer in the Kenya Prisons, he loves telling stories from the good old days over a drink and listening to "Mugithi" (Kikuyu love songs) He will give very good advice about farming and rearing of most all domestic animals. He keeps our ribs cracked all the time! For us FAMILY is the most important thing and i know that GUKA (GRANDPA) would approve.
