The History of Veslestua: A Journey Back in Time Veslestua, a charming building from the mid-19th century, has a rich history and has witnessed many changes in the local community over the years. Located on the Grepperud Syd farm in Hemnes, Aurskog-Høland, this little house was nicknamed "Veslestua" to denote the contrast to the large main house on the farm. Ole Eriksen bought the farm from his father Erik Mortensen in 1863 and opened a general store called "Ole Eriksen landhandleri." At that time, the general store was an essential part of the local community, a place where people came to buy food and other necessities. Sausages and hams hung from hooks in the ceiling, strategically placed to keep them out of reach of hungry mice lurking in the corners. Ole Eriksen, the owner of the general store, was a friendly and helpful merchant who knew everyone in the surrounding area and ensured a good selection of goods for his customers. Ole Eriksen ran the general store until his son, Johan O. Grepperud, took over in 1904. As time passed, the general store closed its doors, and Veslestua stood empty for a period. In the mid-1990s, Veslestua got a new chance to shine as a handicraft store. The new store, called "Ole Eriksen's Successor," sold pottery and handicraft products that continued the local craft tradition. Gerd-Anny Høntorp (née Grepperud), Ole Eriksen's great-grandchild, ran the store with great enthusiasm for local craftsmanship. As a historically protected building, Veslestua has been well preserved and is a living example of past architecture and construction techniques. In the courtyard by Veslestua, there is also a beautiful timbered storehouse, which, together with Veslestua, forms a charming and harmonious farmyard. Over the past two years, Veslestua has been a popular tourist attraction and has been visited by over 25 nationalities. With its rich history spanning from general store to handicraft shop, and now as a cozy place to stay for visitors, Veslestua has retained its charm and significance in the local community. Visitors can now immerse themselves in the local culture and history while enjoying the beautiful nature and tranquility of Aurskog-Høland. With its rich history and idyllic location, Veslestua has become a popular place for both locals and tourists who want to explore the region and learn about the area's culture and traditions. Welcome to Veslestua! Take the time to reflect on its history and imagine life in this little house over a hundred years ago when Ole Eriksen's general store was the heart of the local community. Veslestua is located in scenic surroundings, close to Hemnessjøen – a famous fishing and bathing water that is part of the Halden watercourse. In addition to being a popular place for fishing and bathing, Hemnessjøen has also been an essential transport route for timber floating in the old days. Over the years, Veslestua and its surroundings have evolved and changed, but the memories of the general store's heyday are still visible and alive today. When visiting Veslestua, you can almost hear the echo of people gathering to trade and share news, smell the scent of freshly baked bread from the bakery oven, and feel the touch of history. The hooks in the ceiling, which once held sausages and hams, are still there and give an authentic impression of how the general store operated. Welcome to Veslestua! Take the time to reflect on its history, and imagine life in this little house over a hundred years ago when Ole Eriksen's general store was the heart of the local community. Warmly welcome to Grepperud Syd!
