In many ways staying at Gadzhi's made me realise what an excellent decision I made when, in the face of much criticism, I stated my intention to come to Dagestan. It is a safe, fascinating and incredibly beautiful part of Russia - especially in the mountains. And I can imagine no better way to learn about the highland culture of Dagestan than reserving some time at Gadzhi's. Kubachi is an extraordinary village (or it might just be a small town) which has its own separate language spoken and understood nowhere else and a very unique history as a famous centre of metal-working crafts. You can see many artefacts of this culture in Gadzhi's own personal museum, in which he grilled fish for me using some of the utensils on display! The Dagestanis place great emphasis on hospitality as a facet of cultural morality, and this accommodation option is a great place to see it applied in reality. And it's incredibly reasonably priced too!
