Giannoudi is picturesque village located just 5 km away from Rethymno city and its Old Town offering plenty restaurants, cafes and shops. At the village we meet a three-storey tower which probably served as a fortified residence of a Venetian nobleman. The building has been declared as a monument by the Greek state and one can still discern parts of domed buildings, probably cisterns, surrounding the tower. Also, the closest organised sandy beach (Platanias) is only 3 km away and the area offers beach bars, restaurants, super markets and cafes as well.
5 km away, starting south of Prasses village, it offers a three-hour walk through the stunning gigantic rocks and through some relatively hard passages, which make the hiking very interesting. The Prasano Gorge, which is today the "overflow" channel of the Potami dam, maneuvers through the rocky hills of Gargana, and its stream ends in the suburb of Platanias east of the city of Rethymnon. The river is drowned by vegetation and large plane trees, ideal for a cool excursion. Prassano is accessible only from mid June to mid-October, because of the water flowing through it. It is a very important biotope of Crete, since it hosts buzzards and a small population of Bonelli's eagles.
Furthermore, 6 km away Mili Gorge is a stunning green oasis near the town of Rethymno. It is actually a ravine, which hosts a huge number of plants and trees, a real botanic garden. At the middle of the canyon we meet the deserted village Mili (i.e. mills) which is divided into two neighbourhoods. Today we can see in good condition only one watermill that has been renovated so the visitors can get an idea of how they operated. The water never stops running from the springs located in the canyon at various points, with the larger springs being that of Saint Anthony and Five Virgins. Along its route, the water creates small waterfalls and lakes where you take a refreshing bath under the shade of huge planes.
Platanias is the closest beach to the Villa (3 km way) and along with Pervolia and Missiria they are three consecutive suburbs of Rethymnon, located 3-5km west of the city. They were separate settlements, which have been incorporated into the urban region of Rethymnon, due to the residential development. In front of the suburbs stretches a long sandy strip, along the north coast of Rethymno. It is very well organised, with a plethora of choices for food, drink and shopping.
During summer nights, from May to September, Carretta Carretta sea turtles visit the beach during their nesting season. So, it is usual to see small parts of beach where nests bave been identified, being blocked and not accessible by visitors during these days, so that they can lay their eggs in peace.
- Rethymno beach is located 500m east of the city centre and it is a beach with golden sand and crystal clear shallow water, very well organized and close to all amenities of the city. It offers numerous beach bars, restaurants and cafes that offer umbrellas with sun beds, showers and changing rooms. Additionally on Rethymno’s beach you may find water sports facilities. Furthermore, there is a boardwalk which is ideal for afternoon walks by the sea, or simply shopping or dining.
Additionally there are many choices for beaches near Rethymno :
- Episkopi beach: The sea in this area is regarded to be the cleanest and most beautiful on the North coast. Even in the high summer season, you can easily find a secluded spot on your own or a strip with sun beds and parasols, if that is what you prefer. There are several taverns and beach bars directly on the beach which they all are very popular to the locals and they are quite lively during the week-ends.
- Georgiopouli beach: With pure sand and clean, shallow waters, Giorgioupolis beach is fully organized with sun beds, umbrellas, lifeguard and tavernas all around. The highlight of the area is Kournas Lake and the sweet water bursting from various spots on the beach. Do not miss out to have a walk up to Perastikos river, which divides the beach into two. At the point where Perastikos ends up to the sea, the waters are very cool and the vegetation around are unique. Take care of the sea currents and the waves on windy days.
- Panormo village: This coastal village offers three beaches : The small beach right in front of the settlement's harbour is sandy and ideal for children due to its shallow waters. It is also organized and protected by winds. The second, main beach is also sandy and wind protected with many sun-beds an umbrellas. Finally, the third beach, to the eastern side of the other two, is a small pebbled cove ideal for seclusion and snorkelling.
- On the South coast of the island you can discover some of Crete’s most amazing natural beaches such as “Schinaria”, “Damnoni”, “Triopetra”, “Agios Pavlos” and "Preveli". The distance to the South coast is about 40 minutes by car and all the above beaches are located near to Plakias village where you can find shops and taverns.
