Ratheesh the care taker was very welcoming throughout my stay at the eco farm and the cook aunty made scrumptious homely food. My stay at the kookal eco farm was extremely serene. The location and the views were spot on.
My wife and I had a peaceful stay at Kookal Eco farms last week and scenic premise of stay is exactly matching to description mentioned in Airbnb. The instructions to reach the stay was properly shared by Varghese sir and his caretakers of the property Mr Ratheesh, Mrs Manju and Mrs Latha wad extremely supportive and caring. The rooms were tidy and neat and we are delighted to spend time over there. Such a calm stay where people cannot refuse to be in for second time. Thanks again to the entire crew for arranging such a serene environment.
It was a peaceful cozy stay! Host Varghese was highly responsive and provided the detailed instructions to find the location. They maintained the property super tidy and clean. Hospitality is commendable!! It’s a must visit place if you are looking for a break.
Kookal Eco Farmstay - A private forest to live in! I took the mudhouse as we were only two persons - however, the entire property was just for us with full privacy! Food were quickly cooked and of great taste home food. The entire property including the inside and restrooms were sparking clean and neat! Whole place is well planned and neatly decorated with pleasant lights with complete Safety! The place is quite remote though there are public transport available - which was exactly what I needed. The host Mr.Varghese is quite pro-active and provided immense detail to reach the place. It is literally a heaven located at walkable distance from famous Kookal Lake; We enjoyed camp fire and BBQ chicken at a very reasonable price and an outstanding taste! The caretaker Mr. PMR is very friendly and takes effective and proactive care of the Guests. Really couldn't find any CONS for this place at all. Some might feel that Restaurants/shops are not nearby - Which is exactly the point! privacy
Kookal has the biggest patch of the rare Shola forests in the entire upper Palani Hills located in the Western Ghats. It would be interesting to note that the Western Ghats is one of the two biodiversity hotspots in India, out of the 35 worldwide. Kookal is home to 165 species of butterflies and a number of relatively uncommon birds such as the wood pigeons, Nilgiri pipit and 15 types of dabchicks besides the bison (Indian Gaur), mouse deers, barking deers, wild dogs, leopards and tigers.
There are three beautiful waterfalls.
Kookal Waterfalls can be reached in a few hundred metres of trekking.
Thoothoor Waterfalls is extremely beautiful and breathtaking. It can be reached in about 1 1/2 hours of trekking down to the valley. Guides are available to accompany the guests. Guests may arrange for horses for climbing back. Note: Forest department has banned trekking to Thoothoor Waterfalls for the time being.
Another one inside the Kookal forest which provides water for the entire village throughout the year requires permission from the forest department which is difficult to obtain.
The Central Sheep and Wool Research Institute (CSWRI) at Mannavanur is just a few minutes drive from Kookal. The site is one of the last extensive chunks of high altitude rolling grasslands left in the Palani Hills, spread over 1,340 acres. There are vantage points from where you can get breathtaking views of the sheep farm. The centre breeds sheep and rabbits for wool and meat.
The Mannavanur Ecotourism site is next to the sheep farm. Horse riding by the lake is one of the highlights of the site.
A 4 km drive from Kookal will take you to a farming village nearby called Gundupatti, where you could visit floriculture and vegetable farms developed inside polyhouses.
The Kookal caves (also spelt Kukkal) are ancient rock shelters that show traces of the descendants of the original Palaiyar (meaning "old ones") tribes who used to wear leaf clothing. The caves are overhanging slabs of different types of metamorphic rocks called charconite and granulite. Till the mid-1980s, over 30 families resided on the hill top, where a small temple is located. The vicinity of the temple commands a spectacular 360 degree view of the mountains and plains.
