Loon Cabin at Wilderness Wind is a rustic log cabin that sleeps four people on the shore of Lake Armstrong in the areas of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. This quaint cabin has a kitchen with water cooler to be filled from outdoor spigot, refrigerator, and stove, a dining area, a bedroom with a queen bed and twin bunk beds, and hot showers, lavatory sinks, and latrine toilets in the nearby bath house. There is seating for guests around a fire pit on the shore of Armstrong Lake. Guests can swim, use the canoes or kayaks to paddle the lake, and use the resort as their base to to take day paddles into the Boundary Waters or hike or bike the nearby Masabi trail, visit local attractions, or shop for outdoor attire and gear and local art in nearby Ely.
The cabin was exactly what we were looking for, a peaceful, quiet spot on the lakeshore, the perfect home base for excursions to Ely and hikes in the surrounding wilderness. Super friendly host made getting settled a breeze, very clean bath house, would definitely stay there again.
A great spot for my family with a young child. We love to camp but couldn't find a site for our whole trip so we booked this cabin. It was a great fit for us. The shared bathroom and dish cleaning area was fine with us but might not be for everyone. The view was stellar and everyone was beyond friendly.
We love coming up to Ely and this place is perfect for the 2 of us. Close enough to town and state parks and trails. The sunsets are unbelievable. Thanks again!!
Discovered this gem and it was a great find! Jay called us a few hours before check in to make sure we knew how to get there. We stayed in Loon and it was perfect for a weekend getaway with a 1-year old. Our pack ‘n play fit in the bedroom room well with enough space to walk around still. You’re in a dark sky area so stars are AMAZING. Jay fosters a very communal atmosphere. Bed was comfortable and cabin presented exactly as described. We heard lots of loons at night as well. Loon has its own private fire pit that Jay kindly set up for us every night. He also set out a kids chair for our 1 year old so we could all sit outside together, so thoughtful! We also had no idea this was a non profit until we arrived which made the stay even better knowing our fees were going to a good place. Hope to come back soon!
One of the greatest things about Wilderness Wind is the peace and quiet of the local environment. People come to Wilderness Wind to get away from the noise of the city and to be close to nature.
From a recently published book by our neighbor to the north of us, David Okerlund:
“What makes our refuge so special is its solitude. At night the sky is crystal clear, and the only sounds you may hear is the crackle of your fire, an occasional forlorn call from a loon to its mate, and an even more entrancing high pitched wail of a grey wolf. Each sound we consider to be a priceless experience”.
We agree completely with David and others who have worked hard to build a quiet community here on Lake Armstrong. We would like everyone who visits us to experience this slice of solitude too.
Therefore, we ask that you do your part to keep Wilderness Wind quiet. Don’t bring your jetski or your bass boat with 300 hp engine. A small engine on your fishing boat is of course fine. Kids should make noise (or they wouldn’t be kids!) so we’re not trying to stifle fun but we do want everyone to respect the quiet that emerges at the end of every day for all to enjoy.
