I'd visited this beach house twice in the past because even though it is isolated, I always felt safe. However, all of that changed during this past visit. The house was burglarized two days before I was to depart. I had been there a little over two weeks. The only person to have a key, to my knowledge was Quentin, the house helper, who occupies a room at the house when there are no guests. I watched him lock his bedroom door before leaving the house the day that I arrived. The owner, who lives outside of the country, says Quentin's room does not have a key to his room which shows how out-of-touch he is with his property. Just before my departure date, I came back to the house after lunch and noticed that my cell phone charger was missing from the outlet in the living room. Later on in the early evening I saw that Quentin's bedroom door was ajar. I notified the host who said that items had come up missing in the past, but that Quentin denied being there. However, it's very strange that there were no signs of forced entry and that only a charger and tea were stolen. This was atypical of any burglary I've experienced in Africa. They typically take valuables, but nothing in my bedroom or house seemed to stolen. The host did not provide any assistance to me after the theft, except a note of, "we are sorry for you". Staying in an isolated house with a dead cell phone battery left me feeling very vulnerable. To assuage the fear, every night I barricaded the door with furniture. There were also frequent power outages which only heightened my discomfort. The day after the burglary, in a desperate attempt to find a charger, I met a cafe owner who lent me his charger to use. The inconvenience of having to walk 20 minute each way from the house into town to find a charger, while not wanting to leave the house for too long for fear of another intrusion, was very stressful. Another low point was Quentin's instructions to me to dump garbage on the property grounds rather than in a receptacle. Consequently, there are several piles of debris on the unkempt grounds. A hungry dog that hid in the shrubbery with her pup would open bags of garbage to feed from, therefore, contributing to the piles of debris. There were also cows that would come to graze. While I loved staying at this beach house in the past, even with its many inconveniences, e.g. frequent electricity and water outages, no working screens on windows, long walks to get food and water, this Airbnb experience clearly demonstrates that this house is no longer safe for guests.
This is my second visit to this lovely home by the sea. It is clean, quiet and well cared for. The hosts are very hospitable and accommodating. I highly recommend booking this house.
This is a beautiful house in an idyllic setting by the sea. it is a great value for the price. it is far from town, but if you walk along the beach, it is more enjoyable. There are no cash machines or western union in town. Bring plenty of cash and food.
What a lovely place right at the beach! We were welcomed by Quinten, he was very attentive and organised bicycles for us. He also made sure we got safely back to Ziguinchor. We had a wonderful and relaxed stay in Abene, it really was one of the highlights of our Senegal trip! The beach is beautiful and quiet, the village is fantastic. Especially during Abene festival! We love to come back one day!
