Zisa is one of the most vibrant and atmospheric neighbourhoods of Palermo. The name Zisa is derived from when Palermo was founded as Ziz by the Phoenicians 734 B.C. The neighbourhood where the apartment is situated is typically Sicilian, with women hanging the wash and talking to each other from the balconies. Everyone knows everyone and new people are noticed and greeted with warmth. In contrast to being only minutes away from the absolute centre of Palermo, it can still sometimes feel like a different world. Sometimes it feels like time has been standing still in our neighbourhood. If you want to discover the true Sicilian way of life, but stay in a comfortable and luxury setting, with convenient access to the cities historic sites then this is the place for you.
The apartment is immediately outside the old city gates. It is a very authentic Palermitan area, complete with fruit vendor, bakery, butcher, deli fish monger and other locally operated stores. Importantly for visitors there is convenient access to all the major tourist attractions. The Cathedral, Quattro Canti, Puerto Nuevo, Norman Palace, Teatro Massimo, Cappucini Catacombs, Zisa Castle and Ballaro market are all within 15 minutes walk. Only a minutes walk from the apartment you will find Citarda, a very good cafe (or coffee bar as it's called in Italy) that sells gelato and breakfast pastry and amazing Italian coffee. The streets are lively and the neighbourhood offers a cultural immersion into Palermo.
From the airport there is regular bus and train services. The train is the easiest option where you can disembark at Lolli and enjoy a short walk through the neighbourhood less than 15 minutes to your door.

The historic centre of Palermo has been developed to be best visited on foot. There is a ZTL (Traffic Limited Zone) that covers the area within the old city walls.
The apartment is conveniently located just outside this zone allowing visitors to park their car and access the historic centre. There is plenty of free car parks outside the apartment on the street. However, as with most big cities, certain times of the day it is can be hard to find a car park.
There is a train but it has limited stops within the city and is better used to reach the airport or other areas along the coast in either direction from Palermo including Cefalu and Castellammare del Golfo or to more distant locations such as Catania. Buses operate both with the city and for intercity routes. There are options to reach Monreale and Mondello as well as other routes, however by European standards the bus network is very poor. There are very limited services and they are not reliably on time or operate into the evening.
Taxis are not common in Palermo, however there are a few operators that cater to tourists. In most cases it is advisable for visitors to have a rental car when exploring Sicily but for the time when exploring the city centre of Palermo it is more practical to explore by foot.
