A lovely family home with lots of space and across the road from the beach. Beautiful garden.
Our family (from small to big) can recommend Katia’s home wholeheartedly. We have had one of our happiest moments of this year there. Location: The home is a traditional Greek farm home right by the sea. We came by car which was a very easy ride from Athens. There is a very good highway (that requires about Euro 5 in tolls) that takes you right to the exit that is 3 min away from the home. In our case, we had also family who arrived at the airport and took the train. It was very easy and relatively comfortable as they took the Metro (Subway) from the airport to the main train station in Athens and from there a local train that leaves every 60 min for the city Diakopto from where we picked them up by car. You do need a car. While the home is easily reachable due to its convenient location, it is also away from all the commotion of “busy” tourism. For shopping and getting around a vehicle will make all the difference. Home Layout : The home offers 6 bedrooms – or what we considered and turned into bedrooms. In the main house here is the main living room, and additional reading room, and two bedrooms. There is another separate building that hosts another 2 rooms. For us this was ideal as we had booked it as a multifamily vacation and had 11 people sleeping there (5 adults and 6 kids). The rooms are very tasteful and make you feel comfortable from the second you walk in. The main living room is large, has several tables and a huge library collection in Greek, French, and English. Its interior is as you would think of rich Greek farmers home 100 years ago but with everything updated and and organized. This brought immense charm to our family. The second room is a bit smaller but also doubles down as a bedroom or a relaxation room. Then there are two bedrooms with comfortable doubles beds. The best is that each room is accessible without having to go through another room- however, all are connected to each other. For us the kitchen was key. While the home has the traditional Greek feel, the kitchen is modern, fresh and really very functional. Most pleasant surprise to the husbands in our group: there is even a modern dishwasher. The kitchen is fully equipped for a large group and has a an appropriate fridge that held all we needed. In our case, the courtyard was like an extended room. It is completely covered by a tree which makes it comfortably cool, shaded and is an natural extension of the home. There is a large table that holds up to 9 people along with plenty of chairs or benches along with a hanging matt and a lounging chair. The home’s layout allows anyone to be by themselves if they want to or close to the where the common area is. The home layout could not have been better. The Garden There is huge garden that comes along with the house which adds to the airy feeling. There is a table in the garden which we used for secluded conversations away from the kids playing cards. There is also a sun chair which can be placed conveniently under the shade of a tree or right into the sun. Because of the layout of the home and the garden, the house is ideal for both large and small groups because it seems to be expandable and is large but feels cozy and intimate. The Beaches: On our first day, we explored beaches a bit further away from the home. We used the car for a 60 second drive to towards Aigeira to a pebble stone beach next to a dreamy fishermen’s marina. The waters were crystal clean and very enjoyable. The beach is not curated and touristy. Only Greeks were hanging out there. In the next few days we found that there was also an accessible beach area 50 meters toward Derveni that really worked well for us as well. These two options served us well because we had younger kids (6, 8, and 11) as well as more adventuresome teenagers. Swimmers and snorkelers were equally rewarded. The sea itself, especially in the morning, was glass like and very clean. On two other days wind picked up and there were some waves but nothing to discourage swimming. The adults enjoyed just stepping out of the home and crossing the street for a quick swim which also we saw several locals do. Details: Katia thinks of many details that we appreciate. There was a hammock (which the kids lloved). Every room had mosquito repellent electrical devices along with the need liquids. There was the same for the outside. There was welcome fruit when we arrived. There was a detailed manual about the house and activities to do. We appreciated a small but very effective washing machine which we ran daily. There is a shower outside to wash off after a swim. Next to a home were a grand collection of snorkels, flippers, balls, sea toys for kids, and even a harpoon. It was if you came home and everything was just there. What you can do: There is a beautiful train ride up to Kalavryta which is a place of multiple significance. The train takes about 45 min and is a mountain train that winds itself up steep hills and sweeping vistas and that we would recommend to anyone. Because of the size of our group we ended up driving up with two cars and then the kids group took the train down. One think that took us by surprise was the monastery hewn into the rook. We did not think our kids would like it but they were mesmerized and actually really enjoyed. The highlight was the Caves (which are outside of Kalavryta and for which you will need a car!). There is a about
My family and another family (four adults and three children in all) had a very nice stay at Katia’s property. It was very clean, comfortable, spacious, beautifully decorated and a really pleasant place to relax in. The beautiful garden with a lovely view of the hill behind the house was perfect for the children to play in. The kids also appreciated the stock of beach toys provided. It was nice to be able to have a refreshing swim across the road from the property. We did a half-day trip to Lake Tsivlou (only an hours drive away), which is stunning with turquoise clear waters and surrounded by alpine-like scenery. It was fantastic to swim in. The nearby “Petrino” taverna had very nice food. Our favourite tavernas in the area were “Lampros” in Akrata (10 minutes’ drive and a good place for a swim) and ‘O Korais’ 20 minutes’ drive up the mountain at Evrostina. At Evrostina you can also enjoy walking through the trees along a river. Katia was very welcoming. We arrived late in the day and she very thoughtfully had left vegetables for a Greek salad, her own home-made olives, fruit, bread, biscuits, juice and wine to keep us going until we stocked up from the nearby shops. We all had a really lovely time and very much look forward to staying at Katia’s again.
