In a residential and tranquil neighborhood, the Appio Latino stretches from Colli Albani to San Giovanni and takes its name from the ancient Appia Antica and Latina roads that run through it.
The area is rich in all kinds of amenities: the perfect place to embrace Roman life with a morning coffee at the bar, a slice of pizza while strolling, or grocery shopping at the local farmers market.
Thanks to the presence of many green areas and gardens, it's a much-loved area by its residents who can relax and enjoy the beauty of nature in an urban setting. The standout among them all is the Caffarella Park, an integral part of the Regional Park of the Appia Antica, serving as its main and privileged entrance.
The Caffarella Valley, which covers approximately 190 hectares between the Aurelian Walls, via Latina, and via dell'Almone, takes its name from the main historical estate in the area, the 16th-century Casale della Vaccareccia, with an attached medieval tower, owned by the Caffarelli family who had their possessions here and reclaimed the land.
The park, crossed by the Almone River, a small tributary of the Tiber considered sacred by the ancient Romans, boasts numerous historical and archaeological remains dating back to the 6th century BC. Among them are tombs, villas, towers, and hydraulic works such as the Valche, towers with mill functions dating back to the 11th century, which, located near the river, allowed for the processing and washing of textiles.
The main path of the Caffarella Valley presents significant naturalistic values due to its biodiversity elements and was the backdrop for myths and legends linked to the history of Rome. From the entrance on via Latina, at the height of largo Tacchi e Venturi, if you head to the right, you can reach via della Caffarella: a route of just over 6 km that ends on the Appia Antica. Along the way, you can admire the Casale della Vaccareccia, the Sepulcher of Annia Regilla, and the Almone River. The trail ends on the Appia Antica, near the church Domine Quo Vadis?, built on the spot where, according to tradition, Peter, repentant, decided to return to Rome where he was crucified, after the appearance of Jesus.
Well worth a visit are the numerous Roman quarries that extend for many kilometers underground in the Caffarella Valley. These quarries were used to extract pozzolana in Roman times, and today they are mostly used as mushroom farms for Pleus or common Champignon mushrooms.
One of the main shopping streets in the capital, via Appia Nuova, with its shops for all tastes and budgets, starts right from Largo dei Colli Albani and leads directly to the San Giovanni area.
Here, you'll find the Cathedral of Rome, the magnificent Basilica of San Giovanni in Laterano, with the Lateran Palace, and right in front of it, the Scala Santa with the Sancta Sanctorum, the chapel of the Popes where the image of the Holy Savior is venerated, along with the staircase itself. According to ancient Christian tradition, in 326, it was transported from Jerusalem to Rome by order of Saint Helena, the mother of Emperor Constantine. According to the same tradition, the 28 steps that make it up are the same ones that Jesus climbed several times on the day of his condemnation to death in Pilate's palace.
In the main square in front of the Basilica, every May 1st, the famous concert takes place, featuring renowned Italian and international musicians.

To make the most of your stay, explore, and move around the area effortlessly, I recommend walking and also using the subway or city buses.
The neighborhood is located outside the ZTL (limited traffic zone), so if you arrive by car, you can easily reach the apartment and park on the street in front of the house or in the adjacent streets.
Pay attention to the street cleaning signs! Right in front of my building, there is a great local market that takes place every day, and during certain time slots, parking is not allowed.
The nearest subway station is "Colli Albani" on Line A (red), directly connected to the central train station "Roma Termini" and the “Barberini - Trevi Fountain”, “Spagna” and “Ottaviano - St. Peter - Vatican Museums” stations.
From the house, you can easily walk to:
· around the corner: Caffarella Park and Via Appia Nuova;
· in 15 minutes by subway: Barberini - Trevi Fountain;
· in 20 minutes by subway: Spanish Steps, Via dei Condotti and Via del Corso or the Colosseum;
· in 30 minutes by subway: Circus Maximus, the Rose Garden and Bocca della Verità or Terme di Caracalla;
· in 40 minutes by bus: Trastevere.
