A beautiful holiday cottage in a remote mountain location – this stunning rural retreat comes with far-reaching views over magnificent Snowdonia landscapes. What an exceptionally lovely place to spend some well-earned time away from it all. Abergeirw is a traditional Welsh farmhouse which will have your heart the minute you walk through the door. Recently – and obviously lovingly – renovated, the cottage blends modern comforts and luxuries with bags of period charm. Expect exposed beams, a huge inglenook fireplace and original stone floors. This is a deep-cosy-and-comfort kind of a home. The location is quite simply stunning, with the kind of awe-inspiring views that do something profound to your heart and soul. It is tucked into the hills of the Coed y Brenin forest park (Coed y Brenin means King's Forest, by the way), an area renowned for its stunning walks, diverse wildlife and famous mountain bike trails. A beautiful holiday cottage in a remote mountain location, you'll find it on a quiet leafy lane with a backdrop of forests and hills. This lovely rural hamlet was the last place in Wales to be connected to the grid – until 2008 there was no mains electricity around these parts. The front door opens into a small entrance hall with an open plan kitchen, living and dining room just beyond. What a beautiful characterful space. There's a large inglenook fireplace, exposed beams, deep-set windows with slate sills and a stone-flagged floor. The whole space has been artfully and stylishly designed with a colour scheme which is subtle, soothing and serene. The kitchen area is well-equipped with everything you could need for your holiday feasts. There is a large range cooker, plenty of cupboard space, an island workspace and Belfast sink. An oval dining table seats six. The sitting room area has been arranged around that wonderful inglenook fireplace, which houses a toasty woodburning stove. A comfortable deep sofa, coffee table and chairs make the most of this cosy corner. Beyond the open plan living space, you'll find a well fitted out utility room and downstairs shower room. There's a backdoor entry here too, so it's a great place to strip off wellies and walking gear after a muddy walk. Returning to the kitchen, an original spiral staircase takes us upstairs. There are four bedrooms up here, so room for six guests. The rooms are just gorgeous. Each double has a woodburning stove – can you think of anything more wonderful to wake up to? We recommend you stay with someone who will be willing to bring you a cuppa in bed. You won't want to get out of it in a hurry. Again, the colours of the fabrics and furnishings in the bedrooms are really lovely here – everything is high quality and new. There are more exposed beams and some attractive timber panelling. It has a very cosy feel. There is a spacious family bathroom with a roll-top bath. Outside, there is a lovely tiered garden with a terrace area for al fresco dining and drinks. Plenty of space to soak up some more of those stunning country views.
It is no exaggeration to say that this is a truly stunning part of the world. Quiet, rural, peaceful, the cottage is surrounded by the most wonderful mountain-and-forest landscapes. There is plenty of great walking to be done straight out of the front door.
The cottage looks out over the beautiful Coed y Brenin forest which is home to running, walking and mountain bike trails. It is also home to some magnificent Douglas firs. The River Mawddach with its notable waterfalls runs through the forest park.
This part of southern Snowdonia is renowned for its stunning landscapes, diverse wildlife, the world-class Coed y Brenin mountain bike centre and trails, and there is plenty of opportunity for hiking, climbing, fishing and water sports nearby.
It's an easy – and beautiful – drive to the coast, with Dolgellau, on the Mawddach estuary, around 9 miles away. This historic market town is well worth exploring. Look out for the ruins of the 12th century Cistercian Abbey, and enjoy a walk along the beautiful estuary. The Sunday farmers market is a great place to pick up local produce and supplies.
If the weather and season are right, keen walkers might like to take on nearby ‘Cadair Idris' (‘Chair of Idris') – named after the legendary giant warrior poet who is said to sit on its summit. There are two main routes to reach the summit, the steepest of which is named Minffordd, it is 6 miles in length and takes approximately four to six hours to complete. You'll be rewarded with the most amazing panoramic views.
For beaches, head to the harbour town of Barmouth, which is around 15 miles or 30 minutes by car. It has a long, sandy golden beach and lots of seaside shops and traditional seaside fun.
