Barehill Farmhouse is a 350 year old traditional, Grade II listed, cob Devon Longhouse; a beautifully historic and cosy countryside 3 bedroom home set in rolling farmland. Located in the heart of Devon it is an ideal location for holidays with day trips exploring the local Devonshire beauty; 3 minute drive to train station on Tarka route 20 minute drive to historic Exeter city centre 30 minute drive to Dartmoor National Park 45 minute drive to North and South Devon coastline with beaches The space This traditional thatched longhouse built back in the 1700's has many modern comforts inside including two bathrooms, central heating, high speed broadband as well as many delightful elements like a spacious farmhouse kitchen, a library, a piano, an antique dolls-house for the children and is decorated with antiques and local artworks on the walls. The property comes with 2 rather charming farm cats Tom and Tiny who will happily snuggle up to you with a cozy blanket. The chickens in the garden will provide eggs and the kitchen garden has vegetables you are welcome to enjoy. The animals will please need feeding and the vegetables watered - this is all a part of the country experience! Please note that being a period property with lots of character there are some low beams, a few steps and several wonky floors. (The fireplaces are out of use in the summer months due to insurance purposes.) The courtyard and garden is fenced but please note we are on a busy road with regular farm traffic and commuters driving by. Several footpaths from the house lead you up into the farm fields and woods to enjoy as well as a delightful walk to the local 13th Century pub. Detailed information of local walks and activities are in the house for your use.
We had a lovely stay in Helen's traditional Devon longhouse. She was a warm and welcoming host. Her home is comfortable, beautifully decorated and full of rustic charm. The nearby road was not an issue at all. Thank you Helen!
Our Devon stay was absolutely delightful! The farmhouse itself was exactly what we wanted for a country getaway and had lots to discover inside the house. I loved some of the quirky old farmhouse features. The interiors are decorated with cozy furnishings and interesting art. We especially loved the spacious kitchen, where we spent most of our time. The surrounding countryside is really breathtaking. On a clear day, you can see the Dartmoor hills from the bedroom windows! We enjoyed taking walks along the nearby trails and exploring the villages nearby. One thing to point out is that the house is on a road, which sometimes was a bit busy during the day, but no bother from inside the house. Personally I usually don’t sleep too well in a new place, but the bed’s were incredibly comfortable, so we all slept like babies from the first night. Helen was incredibly friendly and easy to communicate with before arrival, giving us great recommendations for places to go (and eat) during our stay.
A factor to consider is that we live on a main A road that is often busy with farming traffic going by. The noise of the traffic is evident in the garden but once in the house the cob walls hide the noise. If this is an issue for you then please factor it in. We have children ourselves and make sure the gate is closed for safety from the busy road but if you think this would be an issue and deterrant then we understand.
Parking is on site in the courtyard and can easily have 2 cars, 3 at a squeeze. You will need to turn into the main road directly from the property so please take care.
There is accessible public transport with the number 5A, 5B and 5C buses which stop just outside the house in the lay-by when flagged down (country living!) There is a train station 20 minutes walk away in Copplestone which Tarka train's will take you up to Barnstaple North coast or down to Exeter/Exmouth/South coast and beyond. Details of all public transport is listed in the house.
There are many lovely walking footpaths you can take directly from the house which are through the local open farm fields, through woods and many with views looking across to Dartmoor.
There is a local Farm-shop 10 minutes walk up the road and the village of Knowle is beautifully quaint and worth a walk through to see the little chapel.
