Follow the nearby country road for around 6km, passing endless olive trees and towering pines, and you will reach picturesque Maussane-les-Alpilles. It is such a pretty place to spend time with its inviting shops, bistros and Provençal ambience and the village produces some of France’s best olive oil from the surrounding groves. Discover the region’s gastronomic delights at the Thursday morning market or visit local farms, mills and vineyards to sample olive oil, honey, wine, cheeses and more. Just a little further is Les Baux-de-Provence (10km), classified as one of France’s ‘Plus Beaux Villages’ and home to Château des Baux. In a perched position with magnificent views, there are superb walking opportunities around the village as well as trails across Les Alpilles and beyond. Wednesday morning is a good time to visit Saint-Rémy-de-Provence (15km) with its wonderful market, one of the largest in the area, or venture to the artistic town any day of the week to soak up its artistic ambience and follow Van Gogh’s footsteps, admiring places that inspired some of his greatest work. Beyond Les Alpilles, spend time exploring the glorious landscapes of the Luberon with iconic villages such as Ménerbes, Gordes and Roussillon reached within an hour. Try the summer melons of Cavaillon (25km), a bustling town with a rich heritage, and potter around the antique stores of L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue (36km) which hosts a fantastic brocante market on a Sunday morning. Avignon (35km) is another great day out with its UNESCO World Heritage sites and picturesque riverside setting whilst Nîmes (60km) is a must for history lovers with its beautifully preserved Roman sites.
