Stay in an authentic yet beautifully renovated bergerie surrounded by the sights and aromas of Provence, only 5km from the heart of the historic town of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. The one hectare of landscaped grounds will take your breath away with its olive grove, lavender and glorious views towards Les Alpilles from the pétanque court. The swimming pool is perfect for warm summer days whilst the south-facing terrace is lovely at any time with its al-fresco dining table, outdoor sofas and view of the majestic plane tree, so typical of Provence. Inside is just as impressive with a high-ceilinged lounge with traditional wood beams and exposed stone walls, leading through to the contemporary open-plan kitchen diner and its striking island – we love the thoughtful blend of modern style and characterful features. A ground floor en suite bedroom awaits or follow the open-sided steps upstairs to four further bedrooms including a luxurious master double with a bath tub and Italian walk-in shower. Just off the road connecting Saint-Rémy-de-Provence and Orgon, in less than ten minutes you can reach the artistic town with its art galleries, restaurants, café terraces and Van Gogh trail. Saint-Rémy’s Wednesday market is a must for food-lovers or soak up the ambience of nearby Eygalières’ market on a Friday morning, yet another gem of Les Alpilles. The small and historic city of Avignon is only 25km to the north whilst gorgeous places such as Les Baux-de-Provence, Arles and even the Camargue can also be reached for a fine trip out. Furthermore, you are perfectly located for admiring the undulating scenery of the Luberon with its dense forests, vineyards, cherry orchards and idyllic villages, many classified as some of France’s ‘Plus Beaux Villages’ including jewels such as Roussillon, Ménerbes and Van Gogh’s beloved Gordes. The artistic town of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence is just under a 10-minute drive away, home to a warren of pedestrianised lanes of pretty shops, art studios, café terraces and restaurants. Its Wednesday morning market attracts visitors from across the region and the town is also known for its associations with Vincent Van Gogh who stayed at Saint-Paul de Mausole towards the end of his life. Eygalières (7.5km) is another gem of Les Alpilles, a village where a small handful of A-list celebrities own houses to escape the French Riviera paparazzi. It is one of the region’s prettiest villages, as is nearby Les Baux-de-Provence (15km) with its famous château and stunning vistas. Enjoy lunch out in Maussane-les-Alpilles or Paradou, around a 20-minute drive away, both surrounded by glorious landscapes of olive groves. A little further is Arles (30km) by the banks of the Rhône, a wonderful riverside town with a great Roman and artistic heritage; after visiting the impressive amphitheatre, enjoy a coffee at Place du Forum where Van Gogh once painted Café Terrace at Night. Heading east, the beautiful scenery of the Luberon awaits with its perched villages, hiking trails, dense forest, cherry orchards and vineyards. Some of the region’s jewels such as Gordes, Ménerbes and Bonnieux can be reached in around a 40 to 50-minute drive. Not forgetting the small but great city of Avignon (25km), home to two UNESCO World Heritage sites, the Palais des Papes and Le Pont d’Avignon. Take a tour of Avignon on the tourist road train or, for a change of scene, hire bikes and cycle over to the Rhône’s large river island for spectacular views back across the city.
