Wonderful appointment for families and groups of friends, nice terrace and a living room. Great location for all the Venice sites! Supermarket near by! Very good place for a Venetian trip!
Celebrated my 40th in Venice. Enjoying Elena and Marcos beautiful property was definitely the icing on my cake. Great location near the Rialto with plenty of delicious restaurants around every corner. We were a group of six and each bedroom had a private bath which was amazing....as we were mostly girls. The property manager (Mr. Asela) that we met for check in and out was great and made sure our stay was comfortable. If we had any questions or needed anything he was there to help, which was much appreciated. Definitely a 5 out of 5 and we look forward to coming back again.
Consigliatissimo !
The San Marco district is the heart of Venice. You will find yourself at the center of Venetian life, a few steps from the city's most important museums and monuments and with the best restaurants and shops just a few steps from your home. This district was originally called Rivoalto, hence the name Rialto, and is the original nucleus of the city. In fact, in its first centuries of life the city of Venice was called Civitas Rivoalti in reference to the islands on which it was founded.
The heart of the district is Piazza San Marco, which for almost a millennium was the political and judicial center of the Republic of Venice.
The square arose and developed on the area occupied by the ancient vegetable gardens (Brolo) cared for by the nuns of the nearby convent of San Zaccaria, around the two churches originally present in this area, the church of San Teodoro (first patron saint of Venice), later demolished to make room for the Basilica of San Marco and the first church of San Geminiano, originally located approximately halfway along the current square, in front of the Basilica. With the widening of the Square, the Church of San Geminiano was then rebuilt at the height of the current Napoleonic Wing, now part of the Correr Museum, for which the church was demolished in 1807 on Napoleon's orders.
In the year 828 the fishermen Buono from Malamocco and Rustego from Torcello stole the body of Saint Mark the Evangelist from Alexandria in Egypt and brought it to Venice where it is still preserved in the Basilica dedicated to him. Since then the saint became the patron saint of the city and gave his name to the square.
The statues on the columns of San Marco and San Todaro both remember the patron saints of the city.[2]
Monuments and art
Basilica and Bell Tower of San Marco and the Doge's Palace
The vital fulcrum of the district is undoubtedly Piazza San Marco, overlooked by the Palazzo Ducale, seat of Venetian political power since the 9th century, its first construction, and the Basilica of San Marco, the Doge's private chapel until 1807: in fact, people were not allowed to enter the Basilica except on holidays or exceptional occasions. Until that date, the Patriarchal seat of Venice was San Pietro di Castello, at the eastern end of the city.
It is the only city space to which the name of Piazza is reserved, since in the rest of the city there are only campi, campielli, courtyards etc.
The "Procuratie" located in front of the Basilica and the Ducal Palace were the seat of the legal power of the Serenissima.
The bell tower of San Marco from a watchtower in the 11th century to a lighthouse and finally a bell tower. It was also where Galileo Galilei first publicly displayed the telescope in 1609.
The Clock Tower, restored in 2006, is a very important monument for the Venetians.
Behind the Palazzo Ducale from the Ponte della Paglia it is possible to admire the well-known Ponte dei Sospiri beyond which the Castello district begins.
Other places of interest are the Gran Teatro La Fenice, the church of San Moisè which stands at the end of Calle Larga XXII Marzo and Palazzo Grassi, recently converted into a prestigious exhibition venue.
The island of San Giorgio Maggiore also belongs to the district, where the basilica of the same name and the Giorgio Cini foundation are located.
