The name of this municipality located in the north of Tenerife, which also occupies part of the centre of the island, comes from the name that the Guanches gave to this area, "Arautava" or "Arautapala". It is the largest municipality on the island, with 207.31 km2, and the one with the largest forest area: Approximately 78% of the Teide National Park is part of the municipality of La Orotava. The historic centre of the municipality is located at an altitude of 390 metres above sea level and was declared a Historic-Artistic Site in 1976. Its streets are dotted with buildings of great heritage interest and corners of great importance to the municipality, including the European University of the Canary Islands. The Orotava Valley has always been characterised by its impressive landscape crowned by Mount Teide, its abundance of water, its beautiful gardens and its pleasant climate. However, it has numerous protected natural areas, such as part of the Teide National Park and the Corona Forestal Nature Reserve, the Pinoleris Nature Reserve and the protected landscape of La Resbala.
The typical balconies that adorn the façades of its traditional houses, the carpets of flowers and volcanic earth that are made every year in La Orotava during the Corpus Christi celebrations, and its traditional Holy Week, which has been celebrated since the 17th century, are well known.
The streets of La Orotava invite you to stroll around and discover its historical and artistic secrets in an essential visit for anyone visiting Tenerife. The historic quarter of this municipality is divided into the Villa de Abajo, where the wealthiest families of the municipality once lived, and the Villa de Arriba, with somewhat more humble buildings but of great architectural interest. A route to get to know both areas can begin in Calle San Francisco, opposite the church of the same name and the Santísima Trinidad hospital. These buildings are built on the site of the former convent of San Lorenzo, of which only a portico and the sculpture of the saint remain. Continuing towards the streets Colegio and Carrera del escultor Estévez, the visitor will find numerous examples of stately architecture, many of them decorated with the heraldic stamp on their façades. In this category, special mention should be made of the Casa de los Balcones, in a markedly Canarian style, with a façade that combines stonework and wood and a beautiful interior courtyard. The route continues towards the Town Hall square, where a carpet of volcanic sand is made every year during the Corpus Christi festivities, to the Hijuela del Botánico, a garden located behind the Town Hall building that served as a nursery for the Botanical Garden that can be visited in Puerto de la Cruz. In Calle de San Agustín are the houses of the Marquis of La Quinta Roja and Casa Ascanio, which surround the Plaza de la Constitución. Opposite, the 17th century church and convent of San Agustín can be visited. A short walk will take the visitor to the majestic church of La Concepción, declared a Historic Monument in 1948. Its dome and the towers flanking its façade form part of the most characteristic landscape of La Orotava.
Trails in the municipality
The peaks of La Orotava are home to different trails that will delight sports and nature lovers. The PR-TF 35 Mamio-Pinolere route, approximately 13 kilometres long and of medium difficulty, starts in La Caldera and climbs up to the Choza Chimoche hut and Portillo del Topo. From there the trail continues to the Mamio track and the Casa del Agua, and leads the hiker to walk along the bed of the La Arena ravine.
