This beautiful apartment is located in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, 20 kms from the International Airport. The city has two bus stations in Parque San Telmo and Parque Santa Catalina with services that connect not only all the neighbourhoods of the city, but also all the municipalities of the island.
Walking through the streets of Vegueta is an exercise in history that allows the visitor to pause in some of the most intense chapters of the city and is home to museums such as the Casa de Colón, the hermitage of San Antonio Abad, the Plaza Santa Ana, etc.
Before leaving the district of Vegueta you can visit the Guiniguada Theatre or stroll around the market, which dates back to 1854.
The Italian-inspired Pérez Galdós Theatre is one of the city's emblematic buildings. One of the meeting places in the Triana neighbourhood is the Plaza Hurtado de Mendoza and the Plaza de Cairasco, where two outstanding buildings are located: the Hotel Madrid, and the Gabinete Literario, in neoclassical style and modernist decoration.
In this same square it is possible to relax and enjoy a relaxed atmosphere on one of its terraces. In the Triana area is another of the most interesting architectural elements of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the Edificio Quegles, dating from 1900. Finally, in this neighbourhood is the Pérez Galdós House-Museum, a building that bears witness to the domestic architecture of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, which offers visitors a wide-ranging display of Galdós' legacy, including works of art, furniture, manuscripts, letters and photographs.
In the centre of the city, very close to Las Alcaravaneras Beach, we find the Doramas Park. Its gardens, recently recovered and refurbished, are home to specimens of autochthonous flowers and in its enclosure is the Pueblo Canario complex, an example of traditional Canarian architecture where the Néstor Museum is located, dedicated to the figure of Nestor Fernández de la Torre, a modernist painter and one of the most significant artists of the archipelago. The historic Hotel Santa Catalina, of colonial architecture inaugurated in 1890, completes this complex in the centre of the city.
The Muelle Deportivo, the largest in the Canary Islands, is located on Avenida Marítima in front of the Hotel Santa Catalina. One of the best known transatlantic regattas in Europe, the Atlantic Rally for Cruisers, ARC, which links Gran Canaria and Santa Lucia in the Caribbean, starts from here.
In the port area of the city is one of the most emblematic parks of the city: Parque Santa Catalina, an example of life on the edge of the street. It is home to the Science Museum and the Miller Building, which hosts cultural activities. Santa Catalina Park is also the nerve centre of the Carnival events and the Theatre and Dance Festival held in the summer months.
Presiding over Las Canteras beach, at one end is the Alfredo Kraus Auditorium, the venue for the main musical concerts and international congresses.
To enjoy the scenic beauty of the municipality, the visitor can go to the residential area of Tafira, where it is possible to admire Canarian architecture. In this area is the Viera y Clavijo Botanical Garden, which brings together the main botanical endemisms of the archipelago.
But one of the most spectacular and pleasant walks is a visit to the Caldera de Bandama, the crater of a dormant volcano - with a diameter of 1 kilometre and a depth of 200 metres - from whose interior the lava that formed the peak of Bandama came out, and from which you can enjoy a privileged panoramic view.
The beaches
Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is one of the few Spanish capital-cities with kilometres of beaches. In addition to this, the island's excellent climate means that it can be used all year round.
The main and most popular tourist attraction is Las Canteras beach: three kilometres of blond sand, accompanied by as many kilometres of promenade, offering all kinds of services: hotels, restaurants, bars and terraces. When the sun goes down, the beach becomes the best meeting place for those who want to practice sports or take a relaxing stroll.
The bay of El Confital opens up at the foot of the mountains as an extension of the sea. Here the sun was used to evaporate the puddles in which the salt pans used to settle. The best right-hand wave in Europe for surfing can be found on its coast.
Las Alcaravaneras Beach is located in the centre of the city next to the Muelle Deportivo. With nearly 1,000 metres of blond sand, it is flanked by the city's two yacht clubs. Sheltered by the quays of the Port of La Luz, this beach is the ideal place for water sports, especially sailing.
Finally, La Laja beach is located on the way out of the city towards the south of the island. It is a black sand beach with a pleasant promenade and a seawall to protect it from the waves. It is an area with excellent conditions for surfing and fishing.
Shopping
Las Palmas de Gran Canaria has 4 large shopping centres: Las Arenas, La Ballena, 7 Palmas and El Muelle, as well as the shopping areas of Triana and Mesa y López where commercial establishments and leisure and service centres open their doors so that you can choose from a wide range of products and prices. The Santa Catalina area is also home to small shops specialising in image and sound.
If you want to buy traditional and local products, the city has 4 markets located in Vegueta, in the Port, in Alcaravaneras and in Altavista. Those who prefer handicrafts can go to the market held on Sundays in Vegueta, to the Pueblo Canario (Canarian Village) or to the FEDAC shop in Triana. Another option is the antiques market held on the first Sunday of every month in Santa Catalina Park.
Gastronomy
In Las Palmas de Gran Canaria you can try a wide range of typical Canarian dishes, from sancocho, made from a fish called cherne, to various meat dishes, with a choice of carajacas accompanied by papas arrugadas con mojo, pig's meat, marinated rabbit, pig's trotters, ropa vieja or goat's meat.
Don't leave the city without having tried some of these typical dishes, nor without tasting the pastries and cakes from the inland villages of the island, such as the suspiros de Moya, the bienmesabe de Tejeda or the delicious sweets made by the nuns of the Cistercian monastery of Teror.
In Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, "taperío", the popular snacks, are also very common. The areas of Vegueta, Triana, the Port or Tafira are common places to enjoy some tapas in the open air accompanied by local wine, on small terraces.
