Woodbridge's connections to the Deben are the foundation of its identity; with a centuries'-old history of rope-making, sail-making and boat-building it is no surprise that Sir Francis Drake had his fighting ships built at Woodbridge. Today, Woodbridge is a thriving market town with deep historical roots, a perfect holiday destination.
For food and drink, Woodyard Pizza on The Quayside is particularly enjoyable, while the Two Magpies and Honey + Harvey compete to be the primary bakeries, pursued by the Brown Bread Bakery, now a bricks and mortar shop after years as a successful trader at the Woodbridge Market, held every Thursday in the Market Square. Slightly further afield, The Unruly Pig has taken every gastropub laurel available, recently once more Number 1 & Winner in the Estrella Damm UK Top 50 Gastropubs Awards. Across the Deben on the Shotley Peninsula, The Ramsholt Arms offers amazing views across the water to Felixstowe, coupled with delicious food, while a little further up the A12 the Greyhound Inn in Pettistree has also become a favourite in the national press as a dining gem.
Activities abound in the area. The Tide Mill is a truly unique experience and complemented perfectly by a visit to the Longshed, where the ongoing painstaking reconstruction of the Sutton Hoo Ship is a hypnotic spectacle of craftsmanship. Out on the Shotley Peninsula, a visit to the Bawdsey Radar Museum provides a perspective on the area's more recent history as a significant presence in the Second World War. The Riverside cinema shows encompass both cultural darlings and family crowd pleasers, and so has something for everyone. Beside it, the Deben Leisure Centre offers year-round swimming for those who don't fancy a bit of wild swimming. Also just across the river is the site of Sutton Hoo, as site of tremendous archaeological importance and a tremendous day out.
On the edge of the Suffolk Coasts & Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, walks abound around Woodbridge, while for those who prefer to walk with a bit more purpose, Woodbridge Gold Club is nearby in Melton.
if you can tear yourself away form your immediate surroundings, delights abound up and down the Suffolk coast. Orford with its Castle, Pinneys Smoked Fish and Pump Street Bakery and Chocolate Shop, coupled with a visit to Snape Maltings concert hall, boutique shopping area and crafter centre makes for a tremendous day out. The lovely and very different seaside towns of Southwold, Aldeburgh and Felixstowe are all well worth a visit, while .inland, Framlingham is another delightful market town, should Woodbridge fail to provide sufficient delight.
