The municipality of Los Realejos is located in the north of Tenerife, 41 kilometers from the capital, Santa Cruz. It owes its name to the settlement of the military camps of the conquistadors and the Guanches during the last phases of the conquest of Tenerife. The natural environment of Los Realejos stands out as one of the most privileged on the island, as almost half of its land is protected by environmental laws at regional, national, European and world level. It is one of the best preserved areas of the island, with ideal corners for rest and others that will delight the most adventurous. The Teide National Park, the Natural Park of the Forest Crown, the Protected Landscapes of Los Campeches, Tigaiga and Ruiz, and of the Rambla de Castro, the Natural Monument of the Montaña de los Frailes and the Site of Scientific Interest of Barranco Ruiz stand out. This great variety of ecosystems means all sorts of advantages for those who enjoy activities in nature.
Witness of a splendorous past, Los Realejos had a historical-artistic heritage of remarkable importance, as a result of its economic wealth, the settlement of merchants and the actions of religious orders and the church itself. Nowadays it still preserves important historical vestiges of remarkable architectural interest, both in religious and civil buildings. Among the former, the churches of Santiago Apóstol (1496), Nuestra Señora de la Concepción (1512) and other small churches and chapels from the 16th and 17th centuries stand out. Its haciendas, spread out all over the Royal Kingdom, are the best example in the Canary Islands of this type of building in rural areas.
On the coast there are the beaches of El Socorro, very popular with surfers; Los Roques, Castro and La Fajana, among others. Los Realejos is a very interesting municipality for paragliding fans, who fly over its territory from the summit to land on the coast and enjoy its landscape from a bird's eye view. The viewpoints that dot the Realejos landscape offer impressive panoramic views of its ravines and slopes, as well as the rest of the north of the island.
As for the cuisine of the island, its beautiful potatoes, with denomination of origin in 29 of its varieties, are well known and appreciated, as well as its black pig and its white wines, the result of an immeasurable artisan work unique in the world: the multiple braided cordon, a technique that has accompanied the wine growers of the area for centuries and that gives the wines a special singularity.
Their festivals deserve a special mention. Los Realejos stands out among the towns in Spain for the enormous number of festivals held throughout the year, nearly one hundred, many of which are born of the collective enthusiasm of its inhabitants, while others remain immune to the passage of time and have more than four centuries of history.
The festive cycle for the "realejeros" begins together with the new year. It contains authentic relics of traditional culture such as the crosses that are placed every third of May, the fruit arch in honour of Saint Peter, the procession of the sailors of the Port to the Virgin of Carmen, or the respectful Holy Week.
This property is located in the north of the island, ideal for hiking routes. It is recommended to rent a car.
