The area has many beautiful walks with the coast path less than a mile away. Sandy Stoke beach is just a twenty minute walk from Rowden Court and Hobbit Cottage.
On the opposite side of the tidal river Yealm is Newton Ferrers with its shops and bustling harbour. There's a water taxi to cross the creek, or at low tide it is possible to walk across from one village to the other on the "Voss" path. This sheltered, deep water harbour is much favoured by yachtsmen and lies within a truly beautiful, wooded valley surrounded by rolling hills and countryside. The popular village regatta takes place every August with rowing races and a spectacular firework display on the river.
The naval city of Plymouth is worth a visit with its lively Barbican centre and historic Hoe, as well as museums and other attractions. Totnes, Kingsbridge, Dartmouth and Salcombe are all within easy driving distance. Dartmoor National Park, Mothecombe and Bigbury beaches, just a short drive away, provide stunning scenery and endless walking opportunities.
