The neighborhood was founded in 1637, almost 100 years after the arrival of the Mercedarian friars who founded the city's first convent there. The image that is venerated in the temple was a donation from the bishop of Guatemala, who, on his way to his diocese, camped in the place on May 9, 1537, where, according to legend, the temple is today. The next morning the prelate wanted to continue on the road but seeing that his assistants were having great difficulty lifting the box containing the sculpture, he decided to abandon it and leave four religious people there who had accompanied him.
The current temple of La Merced was built in 1834 and was in the care of the Mercedarian friars until 1859. Its last commander was Fray Lauro Ortega, who voluntarily expatriated that same year. In this neighborhood is the Temple of Calvary, which was erected to worship the Passion of Christ, in times similar to the convent of La Merced. The sacristy preserves a Roman-style arch, painted entirely by indigenous people in 1759 and richly decorated with floral motifs, trees and stars that decorate it. For many years in the choir there was a breath organ, one of those made in the El Cerrillo neighborhood and of which there were in other temples in the city, as well as in the Cathedral.
