We're in Vidigal. It's known as Rio's "safe" or "hipster" favela! Lots of tourists come here for the bars and dois irmãos trail. When you see a tourist postcard of Ipanema beach we are the community on the mountain. It takes 10 minutes to walk down to Praia do Vidigal (Sheraton hotel) and another 25 minutes to walk to Ipanema beach. Alternatively you can take a 12 reais mototaxi and you're at Posto 12 of Ipanema beach within 5 minutes. The traffic in Vidigal is chaotic and dangerous but there’s no petty crime here. There has been no violence for 4 years since a new gang arrived. They have an unofficial deal with the police and the gang doesn’t tolerate petty crime. You may see a check-point with gang members openly selling drugs in the street. But, you’ll feel safer walking the streets here than in copacabana. There are no "no-go" areas, you can wander through any streets, the only rule is to not take photos and videos of the streets when you are outside.
