Enjoyed my stay at Maria's Airbnb. Comfortable, cozy and warm on a couple of colder autumn days in Whangamata. The addition of yum chocolate treats, biscuits and wine was a lovely touch. Although I didn't drink the wine I'm sure future stayers would love it! Thankyou, would definitely stay here again :) - Rachel

Whangamatā is renowned for its six kilometers of sandy beach, offering some of the best surfing breaks and safest swimming in the country!
In addition to its natural beauty, Whangamatā offers a variety of recreational activities. The turquoise waters near the wharf are perfect for a refreshing swim or a fun jump off the platform. The estuary at the south end provides a unique environment where you can observe the rapid waters racing to meet the sea.
The two islands visible from the main beach each offer a unique adventure. Clark Island, accessible during low tide, is great for a leisurely walk. Donut Island/Whenuakura, on the other hand, offers a more adventurous experience. You can hire a kayak and paddle out to the island, where a narrow cave leads you to a hidden sanctuary filled with untouched sands, boulders, and plant life.
For those who enjoy hiking, Whangamatā doesn’t disappoint. The Wentworth Valley walk takes you on a two-hour journey to a stunning double waterfall. The Luck at Last Mine Walk offers a glimpse into the past, taking you through the heart of an old gold mining settlement. For those seeking more variety, the Broken Hills area offers a range of tracks to suit all abilities. These free activities make Whangamatā a great destination for outdoor enthusiasts.
Many of the town’s attractions are within walking distance, making it a pedestrian-friendly destination. Alternatively, you can hire a large and often unusual assortment of Scooters and Bikes and of course rental cars from a variety of vendors in town.
