Welcome to Little Bird Cottage, a tranquil, airy, light filled cottage, on 3 organic acres, overlooking Mangonui Harbour. The cottage has a great central location for visiting beaches and touring the Far North. It's a calm, rural, laid back haven with all the necessities, as well as books, boardgames, DVD's, a sunny deck and a hammock under the apple tree. Our visitors love the views and the peace and quiet. We live in the main house 30m away, with two friendly dogs and the 4 chooks. Our land combines a sweeping hillside outlook with flat lawns, a little bit of bush and enough growing area that we are self-sufficient for fruit and vegetables over a long growing season. The cottage is quiet, sunny, homely and peaceful. It contains a kitchenette and living area, plus separate full bathroom with shower over bath, and a separate bedroom with a queen bed. There is a small patio deck with outdoor dining, and ample parking right outside the cottage. We provide a BBQ, small electric skillet, sandwich press and microwave for cooking, as well as a Nutribullet, so plenty of cooking gear although there is no stove. The kitchenette has a fridge/freezer and is well equipped with utensils and pantry basics. We also have a few herbs and lettuces outside in pots for you to use. A continental breakfast pack is provided for you to help yourself. Views from the cottage look north over a small orchard up to our regenerating area of bush and out to one of our two tunnel houses. Looking south there are rural views and glimpses of the sea, as well as views over the valley and wetland. From the lawn there are wide views of Mangonui Harbour. The cottage is well equipped, comfortable and welcoming. Our family and friends come here to relax, visit beaches, and recover from busy lives. We also host Workers on Organic Farms (Woofers) and they love it here. We enjoy meeting new people from all walks of life and cultures. We are 200 metres from a large, private, kiwi conservation area and the cottage is unfenced, so we can't host your pets. (We don't have kiwi on our property, though).
We were happy to be Kathryn and Ken’s first AirBnB guests in their lovely little cottage. The location with seaview from the garden is just beautiful, the interieur of the cottage is very cute, well equipped and super clean. Kathryn and Ken are very friendly and helpful hosts, who welcomed us very nicely, provided yummy breakfast food for us and gave us helpful tips for the area. If we hadn’t got to drive to the south again, we probably would have even stayed longer in the little cottage in Hihi :)
Our land is just outside of Hihi, a small, friendly beachside community. There are no shops at Hihi apart from the camp store which is only open for a few months in the summer, and sells a small selection of basic items.
As well as Hihi Beach 1km down the road, you are a 12 minute drive into Mangonui and Coopers Beach where there are shops, cafes, restaurants and amenities.
This region is known for its beaches and awesome fishing, with fishing charters leaving from Mangonui, Whangaroa, Russell and Paihia.
There are also some lovely walks in the area, as well as vineyards.
For golfers, the Whangaroa Golf Club is just 12 minutes drive from here.
Pukeiti Forest with it's ancient kauri trees is a drive of around 50 minutes or alternatively, the giant kauri, Tane Mahuta, is 2 hours and 20 minutes from here.
For cyclists, our cottage is 4.4 kilometres on the tarseal from SH10 and would be a good stopover if you're travelling from Kerikeri or Kaitaia.
The Far North is an important historical area of Aotearoa including the first Maori arrival and settlement by Kupe in the Hokianga, the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi, the leaving journey of the spirits back to Hawaiki at Cape Reinga.
There are many museums, historic sites and buildings.
Mangonui was a whaling settlement and there's a whaling museum at Hihi and historic walks in Mangonui.
The museum, history, buildings and grounds at Waitangi are fascinating.
Cape Reinga is a lovely drive and a meaningful place to experience.
The Bay of Islands is great for excursions, shops, restaurants and the tourist experience as well as abundant history.
Drive times: Kerikeri 45 mins; Paihia/ Bay of Islands/Waitangi 1 hr; Russell approx. 2 hr; Cape Reinga 2 hrs; 90 Mile beach 1 hr; Kaitaia 40 mins; Hokianga Harbour 2 hrs, Tane Mahuta 2hr 20min; Whangaroa: 25 minutes. Local beaches Cable Bay/ Taipa/ Taupo Bay 15 -20 minutes; Karekare Peninsular/ Rangiputa/Maitai Bay 35 - 45 minutes.
Whilst Hihi and it's beach is a 15 minute walk and only 1 kilometre away, we would recommend a car for best experiencing everything the Far North has to offer. We have plenty of free, off-street parking right next to the cottage.
For you people who are touring Northland by bike, Ken is a keen cyclist and has some cycle fixing gear in the garage if that would be helpful.
自我介绍
Ken and I are both retired. We bought our land at Hihi in 2020, after 7 years of searching for the right place. We were struck by the tranquillity and we signed the papers to buy it, 20 minutes after we arrived here to view it. It was our lifestyle dream. We still find it tranquil, abundant and beautiful. We hope you do too.
