Nestled on the banks of the meandering Magalies river, Oude Doornbosch is a haven of tranquility nestled in the heart of the Cradle of Mankind. Bushwillow is one of two cottages. Crafted for a couple, it is thoughtfully designed with intimacy in mind. Comprising an on suite bedroom, lounge, kitchen and secluded outdoor area, every element is tailored to create an atmosphere of seclusion, comfort and togetherness. Bushwillow offers couples an off-grid idyllic retreat embraced by nature. Oude Doornbosch Cottages is situated on a well located farm about an hours drive from Johannesburg and Pretoria. It is perfect for those wanting to relax, walk alongside the river or explore the wide variety of activities in the Magaliesberg Mountains, the Cradle of Mankind and surrounds.
Lovely plot of land. Nicer than I thought it was going to be based on their post. Best with larger group to take up both cottages. Great hosts. Very chatty and welcoming.
We chose two nights at Bushwillow Cottage for some rest and recouperation after a long flight from Australia and a busy time catching up with family and friends. It did not disappoint! Nestled in a secluded spot surrounded by beautiful gardens and lovely bird life, the tasteful décor of the cottage was very welcoming. The cottage comprised a comfortable bedroom, bathroom ensuite, lounge and adequately resourced kitchen. An inviting patio, equipped with a barbecue, provided much needed relaxation as we took in the magnificent night sky. The Magaliesberg Mountains, Cradle of Mankind, Hartebeestpoort Dam and other attractions were within easy reach, making the cottage an ideal base. A stroll and picnic along the river bank on the property, added to the peaceful and soothing ambience. Our host, Duncan was helpful and friendly, and we valued his willingness to share his knowledge of the area and its attractions. We left feeling refreshed and very satisfied with our off-the-grid experience.
Visiting Africa from Canada is always a treat. I was looking for a casual off-grid experience where I could enjoy the smell and sounds of the African bush. Duncan was a thoughtful host and provided directions and information of the local surrounds. I found it an easy trip to the farm from my hotel in Sandton, stopping along the way for a few supplies. The cottage is simple, well outfitted and has good cooking facilities. I arrived in the early evening, enjoyed a relaxed stroll to the river at sunset, prepared a meal and then headed outside to spend the evening enjoying the sounds and warmth of the bush. As a stargazer, the lack of light pollution made for an enjoyable evening of viewing. After a restful off-grid night (the units are solar powered and very quiet) I visited the Cradle of Humankind and the Sterkfontein and Maropeng Caves as suggested by Duncan. Checkout was simple and I felt fortunate to have found such a gem.
We had a wonderful stay with beautiful, peaceful and private surroundings. The complimentary breakfast items were amazing especially the fig jam. The bed was extremely comfortable and the linen was perfectly clean and of a great quality. The only aspect that we would like to see addressed is that the gas geysers should just be turned up slightly, especially now with winter around the corner.
