Charming Scandinavian-inspired renovated Miner's cottage in a private garden sanctuary. Originally built in the 1860s during the Goldrush, Apple Cottage Maldon is a rustic country haven ideal for a romantic getaway or quiet retreat. Suits individuals, couples or small family. Peaceful and private, the cottage is fully self-contained and set on a corner acreage with beautifully designed landscaping, alfresco dining spaces and a wild rambling garden. Apple Cottage Maldon is a tiny, cosy home away from home - our family getaway that we are delighted to share with you to enjoy the taste of a simpler, slower pace of life. The cottage is styled with a mix of vintage and modern items, inspired by Scandinavian country houses to be both beautiful and practical. There are two bedrooms - the main room with an antique double bed, the second room also with a double bed that can be made up for adults or children to share - please let us know in advance. The cute eat-in kitchen has everything you need to cook a lovely meal, or you can dine alfresco outside and use the gas BBQ grill. We highly recommend taking a long, relaxing bath in the original clawfoot bath, which also has a large overhead rain shower. A washing machine is available with undercover clothes line outside. We have been slowly DIY renovating the house over 3 years to make it as sustainable and eco-friendly as possible whilst maintaining its heritage charm. At Apple Cottage we live with the seasons and weather, opening up the house in the cool evenings to let the breeze through on hot days, or using the fans and heaters as required. There is no air-con, and in winter guests can use the open fireplace. Deliberately designed as a digital detox, there is no tv or internet at the cottage, though mobile wifi reception is excellent! There is a well-stocked bookshelf and plenty of board games, and you can stream media and music on your own devices. The space is ideal for writers and artists seeking a calm, quiet place for creativity and inspiration close to nature. The gardens around the house have been designed by local landscape architect Tim Pilgrim, and are full of flowering plants, herbs and fruit trees including apples, quinces, olives, lemons, limes and sour cherries. Guests are welcome to pick herbs and edibles from the garden for personal use. The cottage and garden is set on one corner of a lightly wooded paddock just over an acre in size. The land used to be owned by a family of farriers who made horseshoes during the Goldrush in Maldon so there are several heritage remains and out houses dotted around the property. There is an old forge smithy and coking oven, an ancient horse-drawn wagon, a toolshed and large heritage-listed barn and stables - however these are not for guest access. There is also a caravan onsite that is currently not available for guest use.
Cute cottage and nice country getaway - Kim went to extra effort to leave out toys for my son Charlie.
Beautiful little place, decorated with vintage style and so peaceful. It was a lovely place to stay.
Really enjoyed staying at this lovely little place in Maldon. A great spot far enough from the Main Street that it’s quiet but still within walking distance. Kim is a great host.
This is an adorably cute cottage and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. I’ve stayed in well over 100 Airbnbs in my life, and this one is in my top 3 favourites. I felt calm and creativity flowing through me from the moment I entered. The hosts obviously have an amazing sense of style, and know how to create a space that is truely homely, comfortable, inspiring and has everything you need. We really appreciated being able to stay in an historic home with the original feel and design in tact - it felt like stepping back in time but with all the modern comforts. The bathtub was a wonderful bonus. It is very private & quiet, on the corner of 2 quiet streets on the edge of town (we didn’t have any cars driving past, and no people). Be aware that if you stay mid-week there aren’t really many (any?) good dinner options available in town, so best to bring your own supplies or eat elsewhere. Overall we were very happy with our choice to stay here, and hope to come back for longer next time
There is so much to see and do around Maldon! However our favourite activity is to take a stroll around the neighbouring farms in the evening to look at the haystacks and kangaroos and catch a glimpse of the blue hills in the distance.
Apple Cottage Maldon is just round the corner (5 min walk) from the historic Victorian Goldfields Railway Station where you can catch an authentic steam train to and from Castlemaine.
There are some excellent shops in Maldon Main Street, including a butcher, IGA supermarket, wine shop and the wonderful Maldon Bakery (2 min drive, 10 min walk) - head there first thing for fresh local bread or lunch.
The Maldon Vintage Machinery Museum is also worth a visit especially with kids. It is a few minutes walk on a quiet country road opposite the Beehive Gold Mine ruins.
There is plenty of space for parking on the property.
Maldon town centre is 1.2km away - a short 2 minute car trip or a 10-15 minute walk past the historic Beehive Mine Ruins and the Maldon Vintage Machinery Museum or along the main road.
The closest train station is at Castlemaine, 19km away - about 15 minutes by car or an hour's bike ride along the Castlemaine to Maldon bicycle trail alongside the Victorian Goldfields Railway Route.
Or, catch the historic steam train to/from Castlemaine on weekends on the authentic Victorian Goldfields Railway!

Hello! I'm Kim and that's my husband Matt in the photo. Ask us about DIY renovations and how to put together IKEA furniture. We live in an apartment in Melbourne with our young child and a very charming cat, and head to Maldon whenever we can to get away from busy city life!
