Higham St Mary · 整套出租单元 · 1室1床1.0卫 · 可住2人 · Quiet retreat in Constable Country
The newly refurbished Hill House Annex is in the heart of Constable country with incredible views and private access to 10 acres of countryside in the Dedham Vale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Perfect for homeworking and/or exploring the surrounding area. It is also on a well known cycle route so could be an ideal pitstop on your travels. Small well behaved dogs are welcome but the flat is a bit small for bigger dogs. The Annex is part of Hill House, which was originally built in the 1600s and has been gradually extended through the years. The Annex wing was the last to be added to Hill House in the 1900s and was newly renovated in 2021 to a high standard with a private entrance, parking and bike sheds. It has an open plan kitchen / living room, complete with Apple TV. The kitchen is fully fitted with a fridge/freezer, dishwasher, induction hob and Nespresso coffee machine. The wifi is reliable and runs at 45-50 mpbs. The bedroom has a double bed and wardrobe with gorgeous views over the gardens. The luxurious bathroom has a bath and shower (and washing machine/dryer). The property has 10 acres of charming private woodland to explore, including a large pond, bluebell woods and large sunny fields overlooked by a towering owl nesting house. Take your picnic and spend the day spotting an array of wildlife including muntjac deer, badgers, rabbits and woodpeckers. The grounds are also excellent for wildlife/landscape photography, and as the location is set on top of a hill there are incredible sunrises, sunsets and rainbows.
This was my second stay here and it was lovely to be back. The Annex is a quiet, calm and relaxing place to stay, with all the amenities you need for a few days away. Having a coffee in the morning sun watching the pheasants on the lawn was just delightful :)
Thank you, its a very peaceful place, ear to Constable country, the coast for walks and other interesting places. Lovely walk around the grounds with fabulous views.
Comfortable, well equipped and very clean property. Helpful hosts. Lovely surroundings with lots of trees and wildlife.
We loved staying at the Hill House Annex, if only for two nights. We had a warm welcome with fresh flowers in the bedroom. The accommodation itself is small (and maybe a bit warm on summer days), but comfortable. The surrounding area was beautiful and we got to see some deer (and rabbits, squirrels, bats). We were sorry to have to leave and we would definitely stay again. Perfect location if you come from or leaving for the ferry at Harwich.
The pretty Suffolk village of Higham stands on the north bank of the River Brett, near its junction with the River Stour.
The village is located in the Dedham Vale, in the heart of Constable Country, known for its links to 18th-century painter John Constable, who was born in nearby East Bergholt. One of Constable's most well-known landscapes is a view of the Stour Valley from Higham.
There are 18 'listed' buildings in the village, all but one of them listed Grade II by English heritage for historic interest.
The one exception is St Mary's Church, with a 13th-century west tower and 14th-century nave and chancel. Highlights inside St Mary's include medieval poppyhead bench ends and a 15th-century timber roof decorated with a fascinating array of wooden corbels depicting grotesque and humorous faces.
The village name comes from the Old English terms for a high homestead. The village is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 when it was held by Count Eustace of Boulogne. The Domesday Book records a water mill, probably near the site of the Old Mill House on the River Brett.
Beside the church is Higham Hall, dating to the early 19th century. Behind the Georgian main block is a 17th-century range of red brick, and in the front garden is a giant redwood tree.
On Lower Street is The Old Cottage, a picturesque 16th century thatched and timber-framed house with a gabled porch. On Upper Street is The Old Post Office, whose name tells of its use as the village post office for many years. The house dates to the 17th century, with timber-framed walls and a tile roof. Another older building is The Old Vicarage on Higham Road. This is another timber-framed house dating to the 16th century.
Pound Farm was the home of artist Cedric Morris, who rented the house from 1929. The owner left the house to Morris in 1932 and it became a beacon for popular artists including sculptor Barbara Hepworth.
Within the parish is Rowley Grove, a nature reserve known for its ancient woodland.

We would advise using a car to get here - the nearest supermarket is a Co-op in Dedham which is about 8 minutes drive, 20 minutes cycle or roughly an hour's walk. There is a local pub that does great food and craft beer in Stratford St Mary called the Swan which is a 25 minute walk, which is accessible mainly by public footpath. We have private parking for the Annex which can accommodate two cars, and lockable sheds for bicycles.
