So, this place may not be for everyone. I wanted to be near Crater Lake and I was open to a different experience; this more than filled those two objectives. It’s a stunningly beautiful setting, with a stream on site, quiet all around and touches that are both authentic and quaint. I stayed in the Bunkhouse and it is accurately described. Not much in the way of a cooking space, but if you can cook, you can make something work there. If you’re prepared to be remote for a bit, this is a great escape from hustle and bustle. You might have to stop for a free range cow or six in the road.
Lovely bunkhouse and very comfortable. Off-the-grid experience! The ranch is very beautiful!
I’ve been doing the Air Bnb thang for a while now and this is the first “ just okay” review I’ve ever written about a stay. My husband, myself, and a friend stayed here after a hot hike at Crater Lake. At 7pm, it was registering 90 degrees in Butte Falls. PROS: absolutely serene location full of wildlife. The working ranch vibe was beautiful. Being a country girl myself, I love being surrounded by farm animals, and drinking coffee in the morning on the porch near two gorgeous old oak trees was a great start to the day. Also the tenants living in the main house were warm and welcoming, and we fell in love with their dog. The spring water was damn delicious! CONS: For people who are used to comfort, this experience is rustic. I don’t mind rustic, but there were a few things about my experience that rubbed me wrong. 1) Communication: so I never met Mandy, and I only communicated with Sarah via the Air Bnb app, because neither women live anywhere near the area. There was some miscommunication about “cooking facilities;” I had tried to ask Sarah about cookware for the hot pan that is provided in the kitchen. I had called it “stovetop”, and Sarah reiterated their were no cooking facilities. If you stay here there is a hot pan, and we actually made quite a delicious meal with that bad boy. I also didn’t realize that I needed to text the ranch managers about what time we were checking in, and I thought I had ample time. I had no idea there was no reception at Crater Lake , so I was only able to text Mike and Kelli 30 minutes prior to our arrival. I don’t like to do that to folks. I never heard back from Mike or Kelli throughout my entire stay. 2) RED FLAG: The heat inside the house! The listing says there’s no AC but that the insulation keeps it cool in the summer, and that if it becomes unbearable, there are fans provided. The owners are on solar power, so they don’t want to drain their power, which is perfectly understandable. However, when we arrived, it was approximately 85-90 degrees inside the house, even with the tiny slat windows open( if you want to call them windows). The weather was completely still and hot. No wind whatsoever. It was actually cooler outside than inside. When I messaged Sarah that we were desperate for a fan to push the hot air out, she pushed back saying that if we kept the windows and door open, the breeze would cool down. There was no breeze. This response angered me. For $254, my only request was a fan to keep my husband and friend cooler than the ambient inside temperature of 90 degrees and here I was receiving pushback by someone who wasn’t in-person experiencing the heat and current weather condition for themselves! I was only asking because fans were mentioned in this listing. Maybe fans are mentioned as a CYA response, no clue? I’ve worked in customer service and in emergency medical fields, and when someone tells me they’re hot, I try to accommodate them to make them feel better, not pushback on them, and certainly not if they paid $254. I find that far from country hospitable. I did get the fan in the end, and thanked Sarah, but I shouldn’t have had to convince her that my situation was worth a fan. Besides this, I’d stay here again, if they’d have me. I would probably do this place for a fall/spring retreat with friends. If you like WiFi, long hot showers, large fluffy beds, cooking amenities, and air conditioning, this experience is not for you. If, however, you seek solitude, simpler life, and can work a simple hot plate, take short showers, and love the sound of running water and appreciate nature, this is the jam.
