Picinguaba overlooks a peaceful bay at the heart of the Natural Park of Serra do Mar, the tropical coastal forest running between Rio and São Paulo, about 1/2h drive south of Paraty.
The Casa Verde faces the sea and a 3 km-long protected sandy beach called Praia da Fazenda. The local road stops at the beach and one has to walk the last 250m to the house, nestled in the forest. The fishing village of Picinguaba has a few local restaurants, bars and a small market.
Paraty has been recently recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its both cultural and natural surroundings. In the late 17th century, Paraty was the end-point of the Caminho do Ouro (Gold Route), along which gold was shipped to Europe. Its port also served as an entry point for European boats. The historic center of Paraty has retained its 18th century plan and much of its colonial architecture dating from the 18th and early 19th centuries (on Mondays you can find there an amazing local samba called “Samba da Benção” where mostly only locals go).
There are also some cultural sites nearby like the old “quilombo” where African slaves used to live, and the agroforestry site where you can buy your own heart of palm, cacao, and bananas.
There are many amazingly preserved beaches around (for surfing or swimming) and one of the most beautiful, long and desert is in front of the Picinguaba village where the Casa Verde is. The Praia da Fazenda is reached by kayak or stand-up paddle, of by feet (20 min walking).

Besides that, there are many trails by the coast (covered by the Atlantic rainforest) to access small and preserved beaches. At Praia da Fazenda you also find a mangrove where you can paddle or kayak and it’s very pristine. You can watch birds and crabs that live there in deep silence. There are also some beautiful waterfalls and natural pools.
